Paf joe vs paf pro

Re: Paf joe vs paf pro

No experience with the PAF Joe, but the PAF Pro is great for shred. It's kinda like the quintessential shred neck pickup, lol. It's very bright with a very emphatic attack, and solid but not overly emphatic lows. It's not as low output as the Duncan Jazz or '59, and it's not as scooped either. I do think that the description on the DiMarzio site that mentions it having an "aww" tone is greatly exaggerated. It's not a mid-focused pickup at all, IMO. It's not as scooped as the average PAF-style neck pickup, but it's still very open-sounding. It has a great chimey clean tone too.

It's a great pickup, but I prefer smoother, more mid-focused neck pickups. I dig bright, chimey neck pickups when playing clean, but I find the PAF Pro has a very chirpy pick attack under tons of gain. That attack is what I think makes it great for shred, though.

Can't speak to the Joe, but have had a Pro. Excellent choice in the slightly hotter than a PAF with great mids zone.

:), i decided to can both of these options and went with a “super 2.” Will be pairing with an x2n

On the topic of pro vs joe - Based on clips i heard, i prefer what i’ve heard of the paf pro. If i did go paf, though, i prob would’ve gone with the joe, mainly the namesake implies that it was built with shred in mind and that’s what i’d be using it for.

It’s so hard to evaluate satches tone on the g303 tour (where the paf joe was debuted) because of all of the wahwah dickery

I had the Super II in an aluminum-neck Kramer many years ago. Bright, modern neck tone. No wool or woof.
Very nice for cold cleans, and a great lead voice. I bet it'd kill for shredding.

Re: Paf joe vs paf pro

Thanks, guys. I have a super distortion in the bridge of my s series and really love it. I’d describe the tone as “hi-fi”ish, when cranking it through my dsl.

The other pup (other than the pafs) i was considering was putting a tonezone in the neck paired with the x2n (michael romeo’s thing). I ultimately leaned away from that because i feel like the tonezone (i have two of them in bridge positions in 2 of my axes.) doesn’t hide mistakes well.

People seem to like the super 2 and x2n combo. If it has the sparkle and magic of the original super dist has but transcended to the neck, i’ll be quite happy!

I like all 3 of those pickups, but I think the Super2 will pair better with your xn2.
