PAFs with a little push

SF audio

I'm looking for specific pickups to try out - plenty of PAF's out there of course, but looking for ones that that give just a bit more midrange and fullness, but not sacrificing the PAF bite. Around 300mv or 10K restistance, if you need numbers...

PAF pro and Fred come to mind on the Dimarzio side....Seymour? Others?

Thanks

Screamin Demon (may not have enough mids). Whole Lotta bridge.

Contact Mojotone and ask for the Hot Classic.

They make to order and can tweak how you want. They also get things out quick.

Re: PAFs with a little push

10K is almost a no-mans land. There is the odd one from big companies, but even then they tend to be non-standard like the Brobucker or S-deco which I think is CS only.

Its a hard one to get right, as typically unless you're winding carefully then about 9k is about as much wire as you can get on the typical bobbin.

My recommendation is to contact Zhangbucker. His specialty is in this area.....and actually has a few options as stock winds in about this area to choose from (let alone custom options).

Generally, yes. Depends on the skill of the winder and little things like how much tension they put on the wire.

I specifically asked for 10k on my Hot Classic, as well an A4. I find it to have much more dimension and character than the SNS, for example.

Pearly Gates Plus is a hot-rodded Pearly Gates. Not 10k but loud enough to hang with Texas Specials.

It's exactly 10k.

Also, many many numbers factor in the end result. I personally use a handwound pickup wound to 9.5k with polynylon 42AWG wire with a roughcast A5 magnet. It doesn't drive the amp (and pedals) too much compared to the single coils (in fact, it's perfectly balanced, IMO), but the EQ curve makes it sound LOUD. It sounds like a JB with less bottom and even more top. It sounds as if it's louder than the DiMarzio AT-1 I previously had, even though that pickup drives the amp much more.

The Pearly Gates, or better still the Custom Shop Pearly Gates, do that trick for me.

Have them in three guitars now.

So, basically, what you're asking is a PAF that doesn't sound like a PAF. Got it! ;)

Anyway, the closest you can get to what you're asking for is by putting an Alnico 8 magnet in a PAF p'up. A Seth Lover bridge or an Antiquity bridge are the most suitable candidates. If you're going for a set, then you should put an A4 mag in the neck one of either of those and call it a day. You can thank me later!

HTH,

Re: PAFs with a little push

What Pepe said!

Archer: you mean more bottom and less high than JB, don't you?

BTW: i made a winder guy put me 10k on a butyrate coil with 42 awg poly wire. He made it but over the time the bobbin wraped lightly. Lesson learned: use ABS or nylon bobbins for 10kers.

Re: PAFs with a little push

Check out the 59/Custom Hybrid. It is not compressed sounding, and can still sound somewhat PAF-ish. It retains dynamics and sounds great split, too.

Re: PAFs with a little push

Pickups wound with 42 gauge copper wire coated with poly will give a less compressed, less dense tone than those wound with 42 gauge plain enamel 50's style copper wire.

At least that's the way it sounds to me.

PAF's will be more dense.

Gibson T-Tops, the Duncan Jazz and Duncan APH-1 and 2 seem less dense.

At least to me.

Yes - I know about the difference magnets make too.

HTH,

Good advice. 59B takes an A8 very well also.

Never would've known to try it if it hadn't been for recommendations I got here on this forum.
