Re: Paint alternatives
$1000 for a paint job is just stupid. You would have to be brain dead to pay that.

Yep. But they're justifying it by including teardown, stripping, reassembly, and most likely setup.
So I sent out about 15 emails last night and everyone outside Canada says, the only way to ship NC Lacquer is by ground. So Europe can not ship to Canada, and no one in the USA is willing to ship ground either. (paperwork) According to a few places I have been in touch with in Canada say it is not allowed in Canada. But Goudy MFG does sell it in spray cans if you can provide a color sample. They are in Toronto, and they mainly do furniture so they are allowed to sell the NC lacquer for furniture. SMH. So I will keep that in mind, but i'd prefer to buy the paint and spray it with an air brush or sprayer.
I am going to contact Sherwin Williams and see what they can do for me.
i think there is a special car quest in hamilton that does automotive paint stuff so i will contact them as well.
And yes i know 1000 for a paint job is crazy, that's why I am in here. ;-)
So an oil finish that costs only some hard work and less then $20 is not even a choice here ?
It's in no way related to what the OP is looking for.
He is looking for a specific Fender custom color, and for something that is sprayed. Oil is not an option that makes an ounce of sense in giving the OP what he/she wants.
He is not going to spend that much, and never was. It is agreed by all that those quotes are out of line. And of course he can get the color. Any paint house can make it if he just provides a sample and/or a code that they recognize.
If dirt cheap is really the aim, then he will get 1,000x closer to what he wants by just spraying the thing with the closest cheap spray paint color he can get locally, than he will by stripping and oil finishing it. Oil simply has nothing to do with anything the OP is talking about. It's pretty much the exact opposite of what he wants. The only thing that could be farther away would be a completely unfinished guitar.

The only thing that could be farther away from that than an oil finish would be a completely unfinished guitar. I understand that finishing with oil is great, and I agree. But it has no possible application in this case.

Last time I checked, and oil finish is an alternative to a paint finish. The original post asked for help because of both price and availability. Oil finish is a solution to refinishing the guitar very cheaply without any customs laws in affect. While not what the original post is looking for, it is a very cheap alternative for a $200 guitar.
That approach makes it seem as if all you read was the title of the thread. He didn't ask for alternatives to The Variety of Products Commonly Classified as Paint (A.K.A. "paint"), as in alternative forms of finishing. He asked for the next best paint to nitro lacquer. He clearly stated that he wanted to use paint, and that he wanted to spray it. While his investigative and research skills might need some direction, he obviously has a pretty good idea of what he wants...and an oil finish is about as far from it as it gets.
As for "any help," you are reading that dead literally. Obviously he doesn't want "any help," period. He wants "any help" that helps him achieve his specific goal.
I quoted not only the title but also the original post. If people giving advice that is not exactly what is asked offends you then I suggest you stay off forums on the internet. Also, I've always understood "any help" to mean, well, any help. And an oil finish is a cheaper alternative to painting. The original post mentioned price and the guitar only being $200. I was not the only one suggesting an oil finish–it is cheap, can look awesome, doesn't violate any custom laws, and doesn't have the restrictions/availability issues that nitro has. So again, if that offends you then I suggest you get off the internet to prevent being offended further.
just plain annoying and stubborn.
