Looking to maybe do a Metalflake burst

Something like this:

or this

Except maybe yellow to Green, or light green to dark green. Although Cherry SB is not out of question. How does one go about this - think spray can...

Re: Paint suggestions

The first two are real sparkle finishes. Beautiful and super flashy. But I don't think you can do anything like that with a spray can.

Re: Paint suggestions

Step 1: Rustoleum sparkle paint, silver
Step 2: candy green over the sparkle
Step 3: a LOT of clear, enough to leave a smooth finish

Not sure where to find the candy or translucent green. In the 1970s you could get it at KMart. Maybe Testors has some? One of those little spray cans should be plenty, it wont take much to tint the glitter green.

I have a can of the sparkle in my basement. Bought it last year to refinish a guitar then chickened out.

Re: Paint suggestions

Auto paint suppliers have everything you need, but, it ain't gonna be cheap or easy.

Re: Paint suggestions

The top two examples take special guns to shoot such large flake.
But they look damn good.

Re: Paint suggestions

As was stated, you won't be able to get a thick flake finish due to the limitations of the aerosol nozzle. But you can get some nice metal flake finishes though, and if you use a regular silver basecoat it'll add more brightness and overall depth to your finish.

As far as spraying the edges to get your burst, there are a number of ways to do it, and personally I've only ever sprayed one burst style and it was with spray cans. I traced the body onto an old cereal box then I redrew inside the lines to reduce the overall size, leaving about 2" around the body.
I basically used it as a hand held paint mask so I could keep my burst consistant.
I've read somewhere that guys will trace the body like I said, but they will push thumb tacks into it from the bottom side so it is raised above the body because they lay it on the body as opposed to holding it like I did.

The one biggest tip I can give you there is to spray it head on so you don't inadvertantly get paint "under" the tracing, so try not to paint it from the side.
I'd practice with a 1:1 scale 1dimensional cardboard cutout and a corresponding tracing to either lay on the body or hand held.. Practice spraying that and getting your can angle right so you know where to spray and where not to spray.
I only stress that because metalflake is a pain to spray so try to get your coats even and consistent cause it'll basically be a one shot deal. Also it runs a lot easier, so try to go with thinner coats than you typically would. Plus thin coats dry faster and that'll be a gig help.

Re: Paint suggestions

Could I maybe get the base flake done by auto guy? Then finish the rest myself?

Re: Paint suggestions

I thought we visited this concept a year or so ago? There's a Photoshop of Hollywood Bob with the flake guitar around somewhere.

Re: Paint suggestions

I am telling you guys, the Rustoleum sparkle flake is a true glitter flake in a spray can for cheap. I painted a picture frame with it for my wife and it was pure glitter flying out of that can!
And it costs $7 a can. SEVEN DOLLARS. And I just found out it comes in a variety of colors!
Just be sure to bury it under a LOT of clear, just like a real metalflake paint job, because the sparkle is textured.

I think you can use glitter flake paint or for a real depth of sparkle you would need to look at the way ladies glitter flake is done on nails... You need metallic base coat pant, coloured glitter flakes from a craft shop and clear lacquer.
You might need clears adhesive too.

Re: Paint suggestions

I'm doing a glitter burst....

Unfortunately thanks to Scott I'm not sure what color now?!?!?!?!?!

Re: Paint suggestions

Testors one coat lacquer... Major flake and wide array of colors. But it does take more than one coat.
