paint thinner to clean pots?

i saw some guy use paint thinner to clean some pots and some contacts and circuitry on his pedal. is this safe? if not, what do you recommend i tell this guy? i care because he's the lead guitarist in my band....

They make tuner cleaner for that. I'd be worried that turpentine would ruin plastic components.

Turpentine substitute from petrol distillate will evaporate without leaving a residue.

Real turpentine might leave a gummy residue on evaporation unless it is distilled to be very pure (usually crystal clear).
