Painting a neck

Im getting a warmoth jackson style neck for my custom this week, maple with an ebony fretboard, and was wondering what i need to paint. I know the maple needs painting/clear coating, but do I need to put a clear coat over the ebony fretboard?

Personally, I wouldnt paint the neck or even laquer it. Warmoth requires it for their warranty but, if it is oiled correctly, you will not have much to worry about and the neck will feel alot better. The Ebony does not need to be laquered. Just put some fretboard oil on it.

thanks, I'll do that on the fretboard, but I'm gonna have to paint the maple as I want that part to be black.

Just make sure you do a really good job at masking off the entire fretboard.

I agree. Be sure to mask it well. And we can't stress oiling the fretboard enough. Ebony is very susceptable to drying out and cracking. But if you oil it regularly, there won't be any problems, and it should look beautiful with that black neck!

Thanks, I'll make sure I do a good job of it and not rush. Can you reccommend a good product for oiling it that I can get in the UK?

Right I've painted the neck with black and lacquer, took ages to mask well but the hard work has paid off. It's been drying for a few hours now, after it's cured, how should I go about making it perfectly smooth and shiny? It's not far off perfect, theres just very slight imperfections where its done the orange peel effect.

You want to sand starting at 400 gritt and work your way up to at least 1200, preferably 2000. After that, get some buffing compound from your local car parts place and go at it with that.
