Painting Guitars

I was wondering, say you wanted to paint a guitar, as supposively Jimi Hendrix's Sister did to the one he used at the Montery Pop Festival (at least someone told me that was true) would that be an ok idea, if you had a good artist? What paint would you go about using? Would the finish be a problem, is it even possible to change the color of a guitar after its been finished?

I think the only way to make it look decent would be to sand off the finish, paint it, and then re-coat it with gloss.

Re: Painting Guitars

It depends on several factors. I have refinished several guitars. Some for resale, some for friends, and some for me.... I dont suggest sanding down to bare wood unless you plan to use a dye process or stain. Sand down with 1500-2000 grit sandpaper until you get an even dull finish. Clean the guitar, paint. Sand with very fine paper to knock the finish, and repaint. I usually do 3 coats sandaing in between each... Then I wet sand the final coat before I apply acrylic lacquer. If you plan to do a mural, chose your base coat and apply three coats the same as above, but have the mural painted on before the gloss coat. BTW make sure the guitar and finish are the same temperature before applying. Good Luck
