Palmer PDI-09 Owners....

How well does the attenuator work?

I was thinking about picking up an attenuator to help my home recordings. The budda sounds somewhat thin and buzzy in my current setup so I'd like to fix this. Here is the current setup:
Budda->randall iso cabinet (vintage 30)->shure pg-81-> yamaha mixer ->logic

I have received better results when I turn the amp way up + put the iso box in a closet and cover it up w/ blankets but right now space is limited and I honestly don't feel like doing that every time I want to record something. I am also looking into getting an eminence 'budda' speaker to replace the vintage 30.

So I was looking at getting the Palmer to give me a good balanced out to record and help me tame the budda some with the iso cabinet.

If I'm correct, you're wishing to use the attenuator function on the PDI-09 for your current amp so that you can get the power tubes cooking and keep a reasonable volume through the Randall ISO cab?

If that is the case, then this setup will not work. The "attenuator" switch on the PDI-09 only attenuates up to 30dB on the balanced line out, not on the "thru" jack. It's there so you don't slam your mic preamps when you're running a 100W amp direct in.

You'll need a Weber MASS or a THD hotplate or something of the like to bring down your amp's volume levels.

Though, in truth, part of the reason you're experiencing better results while cranking the budda is due to the fact that you're moving more air with the speaker. If you were to attenuate your amp too much you'd get back into buzz-town. But if you're able to keep your power tubes cooking and your speakers moving, and just bring down the levels a bit with an attenuator, then it should all be good ;)
