Passive pickups and active electronics:

Can the two be paired together like this, or would my pickups need to be active in addition to the electronics?

Anyways, what I want to do is replace the passive electronics in my bass with the bartolini hr-3.3 bass preamp. If I do that, I wouldn't be able to change the pickups right away, until I get some more cash. For that period of time, could the passive pups be used with the active electronincs?

Thanks

I'm not sure... but I'll give you another bump. Maybe 1 reply will get this going.

Re: Passive pickups and active electronics:

Sure you can. That's how Musicman-type basess work. Passive pickups, active electronics. You might have to watch out with real hot output passives (QP P-bass) because they might clip in the active circuitry.

Re: Passive pickups and active electronics:

Assuming you don't mix passive and active pickups in the same guitar, you shouldn't have any trouble. Lots of guitars do this. The Fender Clapton Strats with the active mid boost system combine active electronics and passive pickups, so do piezo pickup systems with onboard preamps.

Awesome - thanks guys. That makes me really happy
But eventually I will upgrade my pups to the Seymour 5 string stacks...
That's just another hundred odd dollars away =[

Re: Passive pickups and active electronics:

I don't know about the electronics you want to use, but some active circuits only work with active pickups. For example, the EMG-SPC will work with passive guitar pickups (I know, I use one), but the EMG-EXG will only work with active pickups.

Re: Passive pickups and active electronics:

Absolutly!!!! I have put an emg spc and exg in a guitar with passive pickups. Late 80s charvels had active mid boosts in them with passive pickups.

Re: Passive pickups and active electronics:

Actually, if you use the right type of preamp, you can mix actives and passives with no problem. Thats what they're made for.

Check out the Duncan-Turner Eclipse from Duncans sister site, D-Tar. Its made for precisely this purpose. I think they list for around $120, but a local dealer sells them in the $70 - $80 range.
