PATB2 alternative/equivalent?

I'm new here - this is my first post, so go easy on me....:newbie:

For about a year now I've been trying to find a pickup that has the sound of a PATB2 but is designed for regular string spacing.

The sound I'm after is a tight low end, not too much bassiness, but a REALLY defines mid range and glassy top...and that special "bigness". I've tried a few....screamin demons, a couple EMG's,...but none compare to the PATB2, and my guitar doesn't have that string spacing.

Style is SYL/Carcass/FF

Guitar has an alder body and a rosewood finger board.

Any ideas?

Re: PATB2 alternative/equivalent?

I know some guys on here use the PATB2 in regular spaced guitars and it works fine for them.

Re: PATB2 alternative/equivalent?

Can anyone confirm that? I was under the impression that the difference in string spacing will have a substatial negative effect on the sound....???

Re: PATB2 alternative/equivalent?

I was under the impression that the available Neck model PATB has narrower spacing. If that's true, and you really considered this an issue, then you could probably order a PATB2 wound onto the PATB1N chassis/bobbins. The Custom Shop would just apply the same specs, but use the narrower spacing for "neck" position, which should correspond to a narrow Gibson spaced bridge. But IMO you could just use the standard PATB2.

Re: PATB2 alternative/equivalent?

The difference in spacing between "trem spaced" and "regular spaced" is really fairly small. I've used standard spaced HB's in trem guitars, and have had no problems. I also put a tremspaced Custom in my LP. All I had to do was alter the pickup ring slightly...sanded out the ends slightly with a dremel, to accomodate the slightly wider bobbins. It also worked fine.

The PATB's pole spacing should provide more than enough coverage to pick up string vibration regardless of trem or hardtail bridge. If you could hear a difference, it would be slight at best. I've actually considered ordering a tremspaced cover with no holes, so I can put a PATB in my LP with no cosmetic issues.

I hadn't thought about getting a bridge wind on a neck version of the PATB...that's genious.

Re: PATB2 alternative/equivalent?

Part of the point of the PATB design is that it's supposed to more evenly spread out the magnetic field (much like a pickup with rails). So, you can put one in any guitar you want and not worry about the spacing. I've had a neck PATB1 in the past and I don't remember it having different spacing from the many PATB1 bridge pickups I've had.

Re: PATB2 alternative/equivalent?

Yeah that's part of it, but ideally you'd have the poles on either side of the string. I repeat that I think it's not that big of a deal. But to be true to Seymour's vision, at one point he commented on how he felt that when you flanked the string with a pole on either side, you may even encourage sustain on some level. The theory being that with a magnetic device on either side of the string, each time the string cycled it would be getting pulled slightly toward the pole piece on that side, as if to encourage the continuation of motion rather than stifle it, and I don't disagree. In practice you may also notice that "shut up and play yer guitar" also works well. :)
