Pearly Gates HH Setup Combinations

I have a Fender Double Fat Strat (HH) and am lookin to install Pearly Gates pickups. Does anyone recommend any specific HH Pearly Gates pickup combinations? This website recommends:

"Often used in both neck and bridge positions. Can be used in the bridge with an APH-1n Alnico II Pro in the neck for smoother tones; or, a Pearly Gates in the neck with an SH-11 Custom Custom for heavier rock sounds from the bridge position."

I almost want to try out the Jazz Model™ SH-2 or the P-Rails SHPR-1 in the neck with the PG in the bridge. Chances are, I'm going to just go with the PG setup in the neck & bridge but wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations. Thanks!

Re: Pearly Gates HH Setup Combinations

welcome! that depends on what you want. do you want fat? smooth? crunchy/gritty? the CC would definitely be a bridge pickup with the pickups you're looking at, and it'll be very fat and chunky(think van halen's 1984). the a2 pros will be very smooth, with less low end(think use you're illusion by G'n'R) and the pearly gates are based on none other than billy gibbons' pearly gates les paul pickups. listen to some early zz top to get a feel for those, they're very gritty and aggressive. the G'n'R and zz top examples are just recordings and done with les pauls, but you'd get the general idea.

Thanks for your input...the blues are definitely a big influence on my style of guitar playing, so the pearly gates seem to be a good fit. Since my strat has 2 humbuckers, I figure I'm already going to have a fat/chunky sound. I also have reggae influences in my style and tend to play a lot of rhythmic melodies when jamming. So maybe the a2 pros in the neck would be a good fit for me. Do you have any other band/album examples for the 2 different HH setups using the PGs?

reggae!? schweet! if your going to go that route with the reggae/blues thing, i'd definitely say stick an a2pro in the neck and a 'gates in the bridge. the a2/pro will have that smooth, full sound for reggae whereas the 'gates should cover most of the rock/blues stuff. btw just because you have an HH setup doesn't mean you're automatically going to have a fat/chunky sound, the body wood and neck wood/joint contribute alot to the sound too, though these pickups should work fine for you.

Re: Pearly Gates HH Setup Combinations

so I went with the alnico ii pros in the neck (with nickel cover) and pearly gates in the bridge...the perfect combination for my style of playing. 100% satisfied!

Re: Pearly Gates HH Setup Combinations

The CC splits very well which could give you more options for the bridge position.

Thanks....it's a '02 Fender Deluxe Fat Strat HH (MIM). Fender stopped producing the HH setup, so I thought it was a pretty sweet grab.
