Pearly gates in a 335.

Re: Pearly gates in a 335.

I've got a PG in the bridge of my Dot paired with an A2P in the neck, and the combo is really growing on me. The PG is a fantastic lead player's pickup and really smoulders when the gain is turned up. It has a nice bark to it when clean too. The A2P is so far my favourite neck humbucker in any guitar, and its super creamy tone is a good match for this guitar. The tone controls offer a lot of versatility on both pickups.

I also wired up a push-push pot to phase flip the neck pup for the Peter Green out-of-phase tone in the middle position. I am really digging that option - it's very different from the standard middle tone, and it's more useful than I expected it to be.

Re: Pearly gates in a 335.

PG is a really good pick for a 335 or any semi-hollow with a big body (you may want something beefier for the smaller body semi's like the 336, 339, etc). They bring the sizzle and sting while that big body provides the warmth and woof.

Re: Pearly gates in a 335.

Well, I've just found a guy with some PG's he bought but never used, so looks like I'm gonna be putting some PG's into my Heritage 535. I'll let you know what I experience.

Re: Pearly gates in a 335.

Im liking the neck pickup more and more. I was playing some clean stuff at a band rehearsal yesterday and i was like "wow! this thing sounds sweet!"

Re: Pearly gates in a 335.

have you played with the heights of the bobbins and poles cam?
whereabouts do you have them? having trouble bonding with mine (chambered LP)

Re: Pearly gates in a 335.

Everybody with a semihollow should try a nickel covered, A2 modded Jazz set.

Everybody with a full-hollow should try a nickel covered, A3neck/UOA5bridge modded Jazz set.

I can't praise'em enough, but you've gotta hear'em to believe the TONE those "lowly" suckers deliver...

HTH,

Re: Pearly gates in a 335.

AD: right down pretty flush with the pickup surround. I've not changed the poles yet. I think 335s have more room under the strings than lesters.
Kojak: i have a2 jazz in my 175. Its pretty sweet. I never bother with the bridge pup (its still a gibson 57 i think - pretty crap). But i guess i now have a spare set of a2 59's so i might put one of those in the 175 bridge - it make it into a sound that i can use.

A lot of people say that about the 57 Classic: "Crap". But it's not really true. The problem is that Gibson uses 300K pots with it and that makes it flat and dull sounding. It's not my favorite, but with 500K pots it's not crap either. :)

Re: Pearly gates in a 335.

I'd never take the Seth's out of my Sheraton, just too perfect, so I guess I'll have to get another 335 type to put PG's in!

Re: Pearly gates in a 335.

Lew: OK 57's, they are not crap. I just don't like them much, but to put it into perspective, my 175 has all the stock wiring (so im guessing 300k pots)- the only thing i've changed is the Jazz in the neck and its a pretty massive difference between it and the 57 in terms of output, low end and clarity -even with a2 in it.
I do have an a5 modded 57 in my resonator. It sounds ok in there - but that's only cos i had it spare.
