Hey guys!

I tried the Pearly Gates in my friend's McCarty and WOWEE! Man she smokes...thick, creamy, huge harmonics and versatile! I wish I tried it split though! I wonder how they split?

Seems to be the perfect EQ for a dark Mccarty....bring it to LIFE!

We also threw in a C-5 and thought the PG sounded better in the McCarty...richer and beter lead voice.....WOW!

Now, I have to find out about the PG+. Does anyone know about this pickup? I am assuming it is like an overwound Pearly Gates? sign me up!..

Any word on this p'up guys??

Hay' yep those were in lots of Fender Strats stock, Alnico 5

Today were puttin an "AlNiCo 8" in one as a test.. we got the 8 from a old Ibanez Super 70 PAF

BTW hows the midrange? its it a little too much-- my friend is complaining that the A-5 PG is too midrange-ie this after A-2 now A-5-- so will see what A8 does..

i prefer the tone of the alnico II version, the V loses something in the mids

Hi Rich I have a PG+ it came stock in my American Fat Strat Texas Special, Like others mentioned it has an A5 magnet instead of the A2 and it matches the Texas Special pups nicely the PG+ Sounds real full in my strat. The Strat has an alder body with maple neck.

I tried the PG neck and bridge in my McCarty a couple of years ago but didnt care for them I thought they were weak and bright, I still like the C5 better in the McCarty!

The PG+ is tighter and brighter than the normal PG, at least it is in my LP. It still has a lot of the attitude of the PG, but IMHO, it does a better job of chunky palm mutes.

Hi JOhn, I got scared off because my friend who has been playing his Mccarty with his band for years said he had trouble cutting through the mix with the C-5/59 set mainly because he said the tone seems to dissapear in the middle position. I like the PG in his McCarty and he also recomended the JB/Jazz as a very thick and punchy set in a Mccarty.

I am trying to avoid spending for an expensive PRS Artist pickup set.

Some other pups I'd like to try in my McCarty are the Duncan CC and the Rio BBQ.

It looks like the spacing is a bit off - do you need trembuckers in a PRS?

Rich what does your friend use for an amp, I remember when I was using a Mesa Boogie Single Rectifier I had trouble cutting through with the C5 but when I went a Marshall it worked great.

If your amp lacks mids or you like using a lot of Bass and scoop your midsthen I can see why the C5 gets lost, My amp is a 59 Bassman RI its a tweed style amp so it has mids plus the pedal I use is Marshall based in tone. Ahhh more mids I cut through very well.

I know you like playing heavy music and tuned down low so a CC might be a much better pup for you to try, I will grab one eventually too!

Thanks John! You know as a side note....as good as Zebras look in a black burst PRS...there is something about nickel covers - may have to go that route! LOL.

About the mids and lower tunings. I play a variety and like it all clean to mean and run through the Line 6 Vetta II head and cab. I love this amp to death and never really remember struggling with mids and yes I do use Marshall simulations or mid heavy amps for sure.

I do not like scooped tones at all! I am sooooo on the fence on whether I should try another used Dragon II set, PGs, JB/Jazz, or C-5/59. You and Gearjoneser love the C-5/59 and I know you guys can play and have great ears so it is tempting.

Oh, my buddy with the C-5....yes, he was running a Mesa Boogie rack set up. But he said Mesas have huge mids.

I don't think so..well not exactly...I think MESA's occupy the "middle" frequency spectrum (unless it's a rectifier with the modern switch on) in a mix, but they don't cut through like a Marshall's mids. Boogie mids are dark and syrupy-smooth. Marshall mids are bright and "explode"

Got to agree with Jeff when I think of mid heavy amps Mesa isnt one of them they are definitely more on the lower mid which is darker. All I know is after spending way more money than I like on "Boutique" pickups the C5 has Impressed me more than ever and made me apreciate how good Seymour Duncan really is!

Thanks guys...I just have to make certain it works well in the guitar before I spend for a nickel set so I need to be certain it has enough mids or sound thick enough. The JB seems like a good choose as well along with the PRS Artist pickup set which are apparently like a hotter and clearer McCarty set!

I played my friend's PG loaded Mccarty at his studio again and think I may want a touch hotter.....interesting because the Burstbucker Pros in my LP are like 8.4k for the bridge and it seems thick and HOT. Weird. In defence of the Mccarty, it is a dark and mellow tone.....at least the natural tone.

I was hoping Duncan made a pickup designed for a dark guitar - most of their descriptions say they work in a bright guitar.

Rich unfortunately the only way to find out if a pickup will work is to just try it, at least the SD pups are more afordable.

If youn need a bright but strong pup based on PAF, you should try the Seymour Duncan Custom SH-5. I prefer it over my C-5 which is now homeless.
