Hi there, i bought a second hand pearly gates pickup a while back in order to have this setup in my guitar, Pearly gates(bridge) JbJr(middle) Little 59'(neck) the 2 single coil size humbuckers were brand new so i've no questions about them but i am wanting to know if i have bought a pearly gates or if in fact it is a pearly gates Plus. The reason i am wondering is that the back of my pearly gates has a sticker marked "PGP" which made me think "pearly Gates Plus" immediately, Thanks for any help in advance.

It sounds like it's a PG+.....Is the pickup color off white? All you need to do is switch the A5 magnet to A2 and you'll have a PG...Try the pickup as is,alot of guys like and use the PG+....I own one also and I could check the numbering on mine if you like?

Re: Pearly Gates Question

thankyou very much for your reply, if you own one that is just sitting about then it would be helpful if you could tell me if it has a PGP sticker on the back, yes but don't go to any trouble thanks. I'm not overly bothered if it isn't the pearly gates i thought it was(your mention of the PGP being off white seems to tie in wiht the colour of my pickup) as i'm not overly knowledgeable on what i was buying other than thta i wanted to improve my sound and had heard the pearly gates being associated with Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top who's sound i quite like.

Re: Pearly Gates Question

I just got a new Fender Showmaster QMT with the Pearly Gates Plus and swapped it out for a CC. So having the pickup in front of me this is what the sticker says:
IN555
SHPGP1B-1342

Hope this helps.

Re: Pearly Gates Question

PGP = Pearly Gates +. It's not a bad pickup. ALnico V bar and a bit hotter than most PGb units I've had.

WHAT!?!?!?! That's like saying a Jb is the same pup as a distortion - just a different magnet! One of the biggest parts of a PG's personality is the A2 mojo - not to mention the mismatched coils. If you replace my brain with your's but don't change my name am I still Aceman - I think not!

I'm bumping this thread since I have the same question-I have one that says PGP also. So is this the consensus that it's a plus? I wonder why it seems rare that it has this sticker and most Pearly Gates and Pearly Gates Pluses say something else in addition. Mine came in a pickguard assembly already hooked up with two Texas Specials-but, the guy said he had everything built, not a Lonestar assembly-he thought it was a Pearly Gates. So I'm confused...I already installed it and I didn't take picks, but I'm sure it said PGP.

Yes, PGP is the Pearly Gates Plus. That pickup was made as OEM for Fender to be matched with Texas Special singles in the middle and neck on their older Roadhouse and Texas Special fat strats from the mid-late 90's. They are-off white in color and have an A5 magnet. IMO they really sound nothing like a real PG, but they don't sound bad and match up well with the Texas Specials as intended.

Thanks-I'm liking it so far, just wanted to know.

Re: Pearly Gates Question

The fender white is called parchment white.
If you want a definite answer measure the resistance of the pup!

IMO, they sound very similar, just pack a bit more kick

Re: Pearly Gates Question

IIRC, frank or evan said that the Pearly Gates Plus was closer to a '59 than a Pearly Gates in terms of wind (and therefore sound)... Still sounds great though from the guitars I've played.
