Pearly VS Antiquity VS Seth

Re: Pearly VS Antiquity VS Seth

Doc...have you even put the aged ANT magnets in a PG...if so how was that. Also do you know what the magnet strength is on some of these pups...I know that the ANT measure 15-20 Gause, what about the magnets in say a stock PG? I assume from your post that the ANT neck is more hollow, open, and a deeper more 3D sound that the PG, is that right?

Re: Pearly VS Antiquity VS Seth

ne more thing...you said with a full strength A2 magnet an ANT is basically a Seth...does a Seth has mismatched coils like the ANT's and the PG's? i have a feeling that mismatched coils and Alnico II magnets are the key to the tone I am looking for!

This is an awsome thread guys! And it gets my vote for vault worthy!

Thanks man! I have just decided that a PAF type is MY tone for a humbucker. The mismatched coils really make a difference, and I LOVE the sounds of Alnico II magnets but I am gonna try some A3's as soon as I find some! Like I said I ride a fine line between a good fat neck bucker tone and a muddy neck bucker tone! So far the PG is my fav but I think I will be trying an Antiquity very soon! I have an Alnico II pro that will be in something by the end of next week and I'll see how that is...

Hi bro.

First off: In order to learn more and more we would have to get a magnetometer. I am planning to do that soon. ;) The following recommended by seymour in his q and a's that he is using, looks like the one. I dunno how much it is:

Full strength a2 ant and seth with similar DC values would be similar, yes. But you have to see that generally ants are hotter and seths are cooler. ;) Also beware that I sold my seth set after using it for 3 months some time ago. So that's only what I remember I thought. See?

I dunno much about the mismatched coils on seths or ants as I haven't taken their coils apart. Ants might have mismatched coils I dunno, but it certainly does not have that stronger slug coil dominant nasal and uppermid present tone of PGs (and that of timbuckers). Maybe BachToRock has measured some, he certainly is knowledgeable in these matters.

I tried the dun-aged magnet it PGns and in 59ns. I feel that if 59s weren't potted, the result would be quite similar to ant neck. (That sort of tels me that ants are not that mismatched.) The eq, softness, sponginess, sweet singing tone is all there, but it is not as 3d and hollow as ants are. The same goes for my 7.40K PGn with a dun-aged ant magnet. In fact I loved the result, that's why I kept one dun-aged magnet out of one of my ant necks (now having an a3 mag) in that PGn. ;)

I suppose the loss of 3d clarity is due to wax potting. How do I know? Well I certainly did not experiment with this, that is I don't wanna ruin a great sounding ant HB. But this 3d clarity, and openness is a common feature of all the non-wax potted PAF clones I own/owned. Ants, seths, voodoo's, tim's, rolph's, ...

I've used the Seths and PG in Les Pauls and IMO the overall tone is a little better witht he Seth, but the PG is potted and does hi-gain very nice. If you're looking for clean get the Seth, if you're going to use it dirty get the PG.

Thanks Doc!!!

I am learning a lot of stuff right now and I thank both you and Lew for it! At this point I think im gonna have to just throw in the towel and order some more pups...at this point I really need to get a set of Antiquitys. But Im also thining about a set of Custom Shop Pearly Gates!

Re: Pearly VS Antiquity VS Seth

Cool!

The good thing about ants and custom shop pickups is that if you don't like them (a distant probability but still postive) you could sell them here real fast. (I dunno if 21day exchange policy applies here.) And the loss in $'s wouldn't be that big. ;)

Let me know.

Im gonna make a few important calls real soon (today) and get the real info on some things that make a difference...I'll let you know what happens!
