Peavey 3120 head

These have been out for a while now...I know a few people on here own one, how are they holding up? What kinda sounds can you get out of them?

I'm thinking about getting one, to be used with my G12T-75 loaded Sunn 4x12 Cab. I'd be using it primarily for metal so I need a crisp but fiery distortion, capable of immense saturation but with a responsive EQ. Also need sweet sounding cleans.

is the 3120 a good bet for that?

Re: Peavey 3120 head

They're a Peavey XXX with EL34s and rebranded, that's literally all they are.
The XXX has retarded amounts of gain, and I assume if they share the same preamp, so does the 3120.
They have nice cleans too.

As others have stated, it is a Triple X with updated cosmetics.
If is the same pre-amp in the Triple X:

The crunch channel is a favorite on this amp, the lead/Ultra channel is more compressed and hits saturated metal on about 5 in the preamp but you never need to leave the crunch channel for metal. The cleans are a little flat to me, not bad, but not what I would call "sweet". They are a little more mid oriented, than sparkle and warmth. Overall, it is a very solid amp.

Hmm...

I used to play a XXX, and honestly I didn't like it. might've just been the stock tubes, but I could never get a nice saturated distortion out of it. It always sounded grainy and gritty like a swedish death metal buzzsaw tone, not smooth creamy distortion. did the EL34-ization fix it?

:feedback::)

maybe a better question...how does it compare to the JSX?

Re: Peavey 3120 head

I plugged into a 3120 on a whim once, and I was able to get a nice "Mouth For War" type sound on the high-gain channel with a Les Paul. :D Not bad.
