Peavey 5150 help

I have a peavey 5150 and I really like it BUT it is really loud so I was wandering since I am looking for a good "chug" sound like Meshuggah etc. and I was wandering if I could use a pedal and turn up everything on it. since I can get the sound I want from the 5150 but it has to be CRANKED UP so I was wandering if I used a pedal to add the chug while maintaining a lower volume. and if so what would be better a Boss Metalcore or Metal Muff? or any other suggestions and other pedals I should try, its christmas time ;)

Re: Peavey 5150 help

Maybe just maybe EQ set to cut everything into the FX loop (havent tried myself yet)? Attenuator? Also, try setting ALL knobs to 1 and slowly working up to a workable sound from there... Red channel WILL get pretty higainy at barely over 1 on pre and post, even with all EQ set to 1s as well..... Also inefficient speakers can be your friends

Re: Peavey 5150 help

EQ in the loop, overdrive in the front. Set all the EQ knobs on the lead channel at noon, and start the post at 0 and work your way up slowly. :D

Re: Peavey 5150 help

For the EQ? You can't beat the MXR 10 band.

For overdrive, there's plenty of options. Any tube screamer variant will work. If money's tight, Joyo makes a good one for under $40, Digitech's Bad Monkey will probably work okay, and BiYang's OD-8 has 3 different chips if you want to swap them out to find out what sounds best.
