Peavey 6505 112 tube combo,

Good or bad? Getting a new amp the 25th and the halfstack will just kill my house. How does the peavey 6505 combo sound? I play punk and I will be running it trough a epi les paul custom.

The 6505 is a sweet combo amp. It's not just for metal. I could work the distortion to my style and I play a range of music. Not sure how it would suit punk. Depending on "punk" you play, you might be better off with a DSL. A lot of punk (or so called punk) bands play through them. Dave Baksh from Sum 41 uses one.

I have limited experience with these amps aside from a quick demo at a few music stores. I thought the valve king was a good amp. The 6505 just seemed to have "more" when it came to gain. But not THAT much more. But I'd give the Valveking serious consideration.

I'd demo them side by side... See which you like better and go for it.

If you could afford the 6505 i'd go with that. The VK is an awesome amp and for a beginners amp it worth the money. That being said, they didn't make the 6505 combo when i bought mine, along with a bunch of other well priced amps (such as jet city). So if i had to do it over again i'd go with the 6505 combo or probably the Jet City head. the 6505 will handle any gain level you need from slightly over driven to massive. it doesn't do great cleans but if you're playing punk then it doesn't matter.

Did I miss something? 6505's are rebranded 5150's which were/are used by countless punk/hardcore/metal bands... Propagandhi, StrungOut (used on Twisted by design), about a zillion hardcore bands...

How could this one not cut it for metal? Is the 112 combo different?

I don't think anyone is saying it won't do metal. The gain levels are more then enough to get into death metal territory. It also works for punk though. Roll back the gain for the old school punk sound and go to about 6-7 with it to get into the pennywise region. Like i said, I's go with the 6505 combo if i had to do it over again today, or i'd check out the jet city stuff.

What kind of sound are you looking for? What kind of bands are in your genre. That would help determine.

Like Matt said, the VK is a great beginners amp. Hands down go with the 6505 before the VK. The VK is good for what it is, but eventually you will want to upgrade. If you have the means to get something that will last for awhile, you do so. I believe the 6505 will last you longer than the VK.

That said, I wouldn't narrow your search to just PEavey. Once again, depending on your perception of punk, there are so many options out there.

the 112 is the 6505+ aka the 5150 II I think, so it is technically different.

No. No. The vypyr series is bad lol. sorry but while you CAN get some good sounds from them, they (even as a peavey fan), are duds. they don't model as well as the competition and there are huge reliability issues with the sofware in the amps. I also find them harder to use then the competition and they hold their value as well as a '94 dodge shadow.

I had a vypyr 15w for about 6 mouths with NOO problems at all. So i would think that they would ROCK!¡

All of the combos I tried felt very harsh. The line 6 spider valves sounded better imo. Plus I've heard so many bad things about the firmware updates.
But I would go the extra mile and get the 6505

The Vypyr Tube 60 I use for everything is not lacking for anything. It does all kinds of sounds pretty well, and it has all that tube goodness, too. I feel as if I robbed Guitar Center when the price is $450. It sounds REALLY good. Not digitally compressed at all.
