I am looking at a peavey 6505 4x12 slant cab on Sunday, it is loaded with celestion v30s. New it costs around £950 and the guy is asking £200. Obviously I will try it which he is willing to let me do but is this a good deal/cab?

It's not much different than modern 1960 cabs, same size and comparable quality.
Now the marshall 1960v cabs have the marshall-vintage30 which is unique to the brand, while the Peavey is likely current-production version.
You might want to take off a side-handle and look at the numbers on the back of the cone.

It is significantly different. For one, the Marshall cab. is much better quality, made with much lighter hence higher grade wood( baltic Birch) for classic rock and metal , made with a higher grade Ply, otherwise the 6505 wouldn't weigh a gosh darn ton IMO!

It's not hard to find a lot of reviews on the infrawebs.

The 6505/5150 cabinet is a darn good cab imo but most suited for modern hard core grind or the later Van Halen total brownout sound Ed spec'd, and in the general consensus on web reviews are favorable to the cabinet and the speakers within for such. The Sheffields ( speakers), like in my old 5150 cabinet are better suited for more modern hard core Metal, and voiced for the 6505/5150 heads which have a ton of Low end looseness when the resonance switch is engaged. Those Sheffields ( and I think there is also a different Peavy speaker utilized for those cabinets, get a undeserved bad rap because they don't sound exactly like Celestions,or people are trying to get a classic greenback sound from them, again, IMO.

The Marshall cabs(1960 models) are best for classic or classic heavy metal especially with Greenbacks, but with V30's r G12t-75's can really get into modern metal territory IMO, but you are still better off in that vein with a Bogner, Mesa, or Orange .

In the U.S, it would be a good price on a good cab, but verify the the speakers really are Celestion V30s. If not...???.

It does have celestion v30's I can't think how it can sound any different to a cab with the same speakers really. The other one I was looking at was a Marshall 1936 2x12 with celestion g12t-75 speakers.

Both right at 90LBS with the same speakers, and both are almost all baltic birch (except the backs)

The reason you might have thought Marshall cabs are lighter is because you are probably used to them loaded with t75, which is a lighter speaker, and that adds-up when multiplied times 4.

I have to disagree that heavy cabs aren't as good for classic-rock/metal,,,,,,plenty of guys who play those styles choose to do so with Mesa/Orange/Avatar cabs,,,,,which are all much heavier than Marshall/Peavey.

So I take it because of what everyone is saying and that it has the v30s and is a fifth of the origional price, it's a good buy. Thanks :)
