What is the story with these with regards to tone and especially roadworthyness?

I have a chance to pick one up real cheap.

i picked one up real cheap about 6 years ago.... it was used with the sealed back extenetion cab... i bought it because i needed a clean channel tube amp for my bands practice space that i could leave there... run a few pedals thru it... My main gigging set up had a C50 head involved so the C30 combo was perfect for me to use at practice... After a while it became my gigging amp... still is....

the C30 and few pedals, a cord, and a guitar and i'm ready to play.... mine has a few farts about it.. the reverb tank slaps around a lot when i'm driving my car to and from gigs... sometimes i get a vibration noise inside the cabnet with low notes, but it goes away... Most times at gigs i mic the extention cab... being such a small amp it does not have a lot of low end... but when i add the extention cab that has a sealed back i get that low end i'm missing...

all that said it is a great little amp... i need some new tubes and i will be using it for ages i hope....

as far as sound i love the sucker turned up past 3 on the volume.... it's a different beast at low volume....

I just bought a Classic 30 and love it.

Replace the speaker and tubes and youve got one great amp.

I replaced the stock speaker with a Weber Silver Bell and the tubes with JJ tubes.

Check out www.eurotubes.com for some great retubing options for the C30.

I bought the amp off of ebay. After all the changes I spent $500.
Not bad for such a great amp.

I use a tubescreamer in front of the amp and a Boss graphic equalizer in the effects loop.

Great Amp!

i've been using an old TS10 tube screamer in front of my C30 for more dirt when needed... this amp likes Tube Screamers...

Yes, this amp loves tubescreamers.

I forgot to mention one thing.
This amp has alot of mids and the tone controls arent that responsive.

The Boss graphic equalizer turns this amp into a versatile beast.

i owned one for about 2 days and i must say that it's at least on par with the deville. maybe some people will disagree, but i liked it just slightly more than the deville. the cleans are very nice, and the gain is really great too. to me, however, it's limited to blues and classic rock on its own. with pedals you can achieve more, but it doesn't have enough low end to do hard rock and metal.

at 30 watts, it's pretty loud but i don't know how it would stand out in a gig. i'm thinking you'd be better off with the classic 50 which is going for about $550 retail at your local guitar center.

if you really want a killer amp with a wide range of tones, the peavey 6505 combo is really nice. it's got nice sounding cleans and ranges from blues crunch to killer metal

my C30 set up is kind of weird.... i have some great sounds with it.....

the singal chain is Guitar-Boss Line Sector-(loop A-DS1 Rythym, loop B-Danoelectro Fab Tone fuzzy solos),- TS10 tube screamer, -Boss flanger, -sometimes a chorus and Delay in the FX loop.... C30 amp

i use the Boss Line selector so when i switch from the DS1 to the Fab Tone i get a huge volume boost as i'm changing pedals with different volumes.... makes it like a 3 channel amp... clean, rythym and solo

I use the Clean Channel of the C30 a lot, but also use the Dirt channel... The TS10 is to boost the dirt channel for more gain when needed....

I also use a Godin electric a lot with Piezo's and i just use them thru the clean channel of the C30.... not quite acoustic quality but it's still a great tone...

so i have these tones
1-C30-Clean
2-C30-Drive
3-C30-Drive with Tube screamer
4-C30-Clean with Piezo's
5-C30-Clean with a DS1 for harder rock tones
6-C30-Clean with a Fab Tone for fuzzy louder solos

add the chorus and flangers and i'm in heaven

BTW-the C30 is a great Tele amp.... my stock MIM tele shines thru it's dirt channel

and i'm shopping for a better pedal to replace the DS1 with... for now i live with it

I've had the smaller classic 20 for years, and I have been looking at the classic 30 lately too. They are great sounding tube amps for the money. You should get a lot of milage out of one of them.

It's a real cool, sufficiently satisfying rock and roll amp. Put some nice tubes in it and it'll sing all day. I like 'em a lot! I'd grab it if I were you!

i can't ever get low end out of the peavey classics

it's frustrating, cause they'd be good if not for that

I liked all the one's I've played --- more versatile than comparable Fenders that they're knocking off.

ya i noticed the low end on the whole line of Classic amps is not the greatest... My Classic 50 head into my 5150 4x12 still does not give me the type of low end i want on it's own... But it makes a great amp set up for pedals and most modern Distortion pedals offer some great low end on them

The low end on the C50 and C30's i have is just enough for some tunes... but no Sabbath type low end will come out of these stock with no pedals driving the show

I will say my C30's bottom end tone is greatly improved when i add the sealed back 1x12 cab to it.... but the c30 is so great as a gigging amp as it is small to carry and thru a PA they bump the low end anyways

For $100, I wouldn't wait for the weekend. I'd arrange to pick it up Friday.

indyguitarist had some mods for them awhile back, i think they still do, but it just opened them up like you would not believe

it sounded like a little marshall but with good parts, crazy stuff
