had chance to hear 1 of these played the other day, really liked it. he played a les paul standard and a strat thru it, was only playin clean so didnt hear a ot of high gain out of it but the clean comin out of it was unbelievable 2 me. loved it!!

only got to talk to the guy for minet or 2 but said it takes pedals like a champ.

anybody got any thoughts on it?

Re: peavey classic 30

It's a solid amp that will last you a long time. Peavey is known for it's reliability. They are MIA. They are scoffed upon by some botique guys but I really like them more than most of the "under $1000 amps." I've seen a few local guys who smoke on guitar play through them with great results.

If you like it then that's all that matters though!

Re: peavey classic 30

If you like it, thats what counts. Its a great amp! Nice cleans and the gain will get you near classic rock and def tears for blues.. Its NOT a high gain amp, but does take pedals well. Also responds VERY well to tube changes and a speaker change makes alot of diff.

Re: peavey classic 30

i got tired of hauling a massive and stupid huge Peavey rig that had a switching system and a 5150 head, and a Classic 50 head as the clean channel... loved the clean sounds this Classic series can offer... so when i was looking to scale back and a used C30 came up for cheap i jumped at it! i basicly use some common pedals to try and get some of the higher gain levels the 5150 had to offer thru the C30's clean channel... that small c30 with a pedalboard has been my most used amp ever since... i love using it with a sealed back extention cab sometimes as it adds volume and lower end...

after seeing my C30 rig in action i've had 2 other friends buy the exact rig i use... that says something i guess...

just FYI my pedal board has a few common pedals... i have a Morley A?B thing i use as a kill sitch so i can change guitars noise free or go to my tuner placed on a mic stand, a Wah Wah... a Boss line Selector to switch between 2 loops... loop A is more for ryrthym sounds, Loop b is for solos sounds.... for ryrthym i've been using a Vox Satchuator, for solos i've been using a full sized Danoelectro Fab Tone from about 12 years ago... a Flanger and a delay here and there and i have all the tones one can need...

i use a Godin thru the C30 a lot and it has the Piezo trem bridge on it... the Piezo bridge does not sound like an acoustic guitar thru a guitar amp, for that it takes an acoustic amp or a preamp to the PA... but experimenting i found mixing that Godin's piezo sounds with the neck humbucker thru the C30 at the same time is the best clean sound i have ever heard... I spread the C30 and it's 1x12 extention cab apart and use a few effects here and there... WOW!!!

what i love about the C30's drive channel is it is kind of nice for my MIM stock tele (and my Custom Shop strat)... the MIM is just a cheap tele i picked up used and it sounds great as is thru the C30! It likes Fender single coils just as much as humbuckers! It sounded great when i had my Jackson with a JB in the bridge cranked to snot a few years back for a fund raiser gig me and some co-workers did... we basicly had about 2 minutes to carry our gear out plug in and play so i needed something small and easy to use...

and when i was using the large rig i was getting all sorts of volume complaints... most stages we played were in small bars where a stage was 2 sheets of plywood! we had a keyboard player and a drummer so they basicly needed the room... but in tight areas a 4x12 cab is not going to work... the volume of this 4x12 used to just blow my pant legs and i never could hear myself but kept killing people sitting too close... and soundmen hated the stage volume being so high... So after i found out i needed a smaller rig i bought an Amp stand for the C30 and it tilts back just like a monitor... a few times i have stuck it at the front of the stage pointed back at me like a monitor anyways... when usin ga PA system it makes a better out front sound for sure to not be blowing off the stage like a jet engine...

only one little down side to the C30 is i'd prefer it if it had some more bottom end to the sound... that is why i add the sealed back extention cab as it adds some low end to it for sure... but the sheer small size of the amp cabnet on the C30 means it is not going to big and bouncey no matter what they do to the tone circuit...My c30 is stock... i know guys go to town modding these things but as is i love it...

drill, where do you live? i'm trying to sell my peavey classic 50 watt on the local bay area craigslist. it's now down to $149. pm me if you are local and interested.

Re: peavey classic 30

Another thing I wanted to mention. I dont have an accoustic amp, so Ill plug my Accoustic up to the Classic 30 and it performs well. Lush verb, nice clean and its pretty fun with the gain too..

There is a Great site that deals with modding the Classic 30. Its like blueahola or something. (steve ahola I believe is the guy that put it up) If you cant find the site googling, go to the PV site chat board and Im sure they will tell you!

congrads on the new amp... mine gets used a lot like i said... it has that british sound i like to it for sure... must be the over driven EL84's... I've been toying with the idea of picking up a new one oneday... my old one is still great and all but i'd like a newer one for the hell of it... but before i pick up a new one i plan to retube my old one...

Re: peavey classic 30

I had one back in the 90s. It was a killer little combo. Its own gain channel was kind of lacking, but the clean side ruled! Gain pedals in the clean side sounded great, and an EQ pedal in the effects loop helped a lot too. The effects loop seemed to be guitar level, not line level, as it handled pedals like phaser, chorus and delay perfectly without a buffer.

are you happy with your ehx muff germ 4? I just bought one from an ebay guy, sent it all the way to New Zealand and only charged $102.90 $US, thats a bloody huge deal. very good pedal, reckon you could hit it a sledge hammer and it would laugh at you

Re: peavey classic 30

Had one many years ago. Great little combo amp. Has its own thing going on, but its a good thing. Occasionally I wish I still had it, but I lack the floorspace for it right now. The Classic 30 + a Marshall Jackhammer pedal was killer if I remember correctly.

Re: peavey classic 30

I have a Laney VC30 which is a very similar design - 4 x EL84 output stage, non master clean channel, low gain drive channel. Unless you're a dedicated metal player these types of amps are great all rounders. A clean channel with no gain control is a great base for using o/d and distortion pedals. I use mine with a Boss OD3 into the clean channel with the volume high and the gain at zero which gives a nice chunk to the sound. I then use a Blackstar Drive for soloing. Great little rig, no complaints at all.

They are great little amps but I would not consider them to be "HIGH GAIN" amps. More of a platform for blues/classic rock IMHO. And yes they are a great platform for pedals. I have been looking for a used one that I can keep at our rehearsal space!

Re: peavey classic 30

i used to own a few peavey's, the classic being one of them. i think it's the best sounding amp peavey ever made.
