yeah uh...sorry for all the amp posts

BUT

i think maybe one of these with vintage 30's and converted to 6l6's might be the amp i'm lookin for, and it'd be cheap. If i remember right these amps can do everything from blues to rock, i played one, sounded okay, but i didn't like the EL-ness of it, or the speakers, other than that it was a great amp, even had a button for another gain stage, which seems like it'd be ideal for what i'm lookin for, and an effects loop, which is a nice touch. I think the tweed one even has reverb & an active presence knob

any thoughts? testimonials? reasons for yes? reasons for no?

I generally like every 6l6 amp peavey makes, but i dunno how well the conversion would go over, i don't wanna hafta have cap values changed or any of that

what power tubes does it come stock with? Also, not to be a jerk, but can you even tell the difference between 6L6's and EL34's? And why do you not like EL34's so much?

there is no difference between tweed classics and the black tolex ones...just the tolex..I have owned both and there's absolutely no difference...also have owned both 4x10 and 2x12 versions....I'm partial to the 4x10 version

yes, i can tell

infact when i played the classic, i thought it'd have 6l6's, but as soon as i hit a chord, i could tell they were EL's

i don't like them cuz they sound too tight, not enough bass, the mids are just WEIRD, and the top end isn't all that impressive

stock i think they run 4 EL34's, maybe 84's but i think 34

The Classic series uses EL-84's and they sound great but do not have the low end of 6L6's which is especially noticeable when using a cabinet with 10" speakers. This is why I sold mine. I'm used to 6L6's myself and was missing that low end. Now I use a Carvin MTS head into a Dual Showman 2-15 cab and have more low end then I could ever use!

The posts above told me what I wanted to know...I was pretty sure that they run EL84's...that also tells me that you are unclear on the differences between most power tubes because EL84's sound NOTHING like EL-34's!

I used a peavey classic 50 for past 2 jam sessions.
The amp gets really loud.

The one i used was the blonde one

The reverb didn't work.

Most of the controls on it were rubbed off - so I didn't know which knob was for what... It sounded good. I eventually figured out which knobs are EQ, and EQed everything to 6. It's a warm amp. But probably wouldn't work for metal. You need a JCM900 halfstack for that.

Sorry that's the only review I can give.

well, I've played marshalls, peaveys, mesa stilletos, all them, and they universally had the above problems

weird mids, not enough bass, lacking highs, and overall - too tight sounding

I'm all for a little compression at higher volumes, but that's just too much

and i don't need a metal amp, i need an amp that can do blues, rockabilly, and rock, not high gain rock, i got other stuff for that, more like, well, the ammount of drive that social distortion uses, prolly even less

Please...God....make him quit carving up perfectly good amps and let him see the light and either have someone build something for him or let him embrace his inner-Marshall......just let it be over and done with. Please?

well...playing through a few amps with EL34's, and not liking the amp hardly means that you don't like that tube...and based on the fact that you thought the PV Classic 50 used them and it didn't shows me that you are even unsure what the differences ever are?

Drew...I am not picking on you or singleing you out, but I do think that you make some of these things a big deal...you should go to a big music store and play every single amp they have...tube, solid state, digital, hybrid, head, combo, 5 watt, 5000 watt...all of them and find an amp you like, then pay NO ATTENTON to the name on it, what kind of power tubes it has or what ever else you can think of, then but that amp.

Drew, are you sure you haven't destroyed your ears? I'm not trying to be funny here, but if all amps sound the same to you with their EQ characteristics, maybe it's not the amps. If a 100 watt amp wasn't loud enough for you, I'm willing to bet that 50 watts won't be enough. I think you might be thinking of the Classic 30, which has the boost switch. It doesn't really add another gain stage, at least I don't think that's what it does. The Classic 50's don't have that boost function.

They are great amps, and there are some mods available to increase the low end without converting the amp to 6L6's. You might want to check with a good tech to see how easily the amp can be converted to a different tube type.

yeah dude. Why dont you just get an early 70's marshall off ebay or something already?

You can say that you dont like EL34's all you want, but i can almost guarantee that it is the tone you are looking for. The only 6L6 type tube amp that will get you this crunch is a KT66 based amp, which is pretty much a british style 6L6...and guess what, they used those in early marshalls and they got great CRUNCH. You thought that your 6l6 bassman 50 could sound good cranked and it doesnt. The only non el34 amp that could get in the ballpark of your tone is the 59 bassman, but even then, im sure it wouldnt CRUNCH well enough for you.

Just pull the trigger on a marshall already! Playing guitar isnt about making a political statement based on what amp you play or the company that owns it, it's about the music you're playing. Just buy a marshall and feel the real crunch, instead of butchering fender clean amps, or peaveys to try and make them sound like a marshall.

yeah i played the 30, i figured the 50 would have the same thing, i saw a band last night that had the 4x10 one and it sounded pretty alright, had a good of gain to it & zero pedals, so i thought there had to be atleast one more gain stage or boost or something in the amp

i have my gigawatt amp, now i'm just looking for something for home, studio, and practice use, i play lots of genres, and most of them don't require that 170 watts, but they do require tones i can't get right now. But that 50 watt 4x10 set on a chair was loud enough for the stuff that i don't need the 170 for, like blues, rock, and rockabilly & crap like that

my hearing is pretty good, i pick up on a lot of things other people can't, actually

i just like 6l6's more, that's all

EL84 to 6L6 will require you to change the number of tubes to two and rewire the power section with the proper resistors, bias pot, etc to make it run properly. This IS butchering :yell: :smack: .

We can't tell you what to do, and i respect your opinions, but the reason why people post on here is for advice, etc, on their tone and amps. My best advice is to buy a JTM 45, or bluesbreaker combo loaded with a vintage 30 and a g12h30. It can get glassy cleans, the breakup is EXCELLENT for your application, and it would not require any butchering.

Just settle down on one of these and stop worrying about your gear. I was a little restless about my bandmaster, but now i have come to really appreciate its strengths, and due to my need for loud cleans, i'm simply going to get a twin reverb reissue and an amp switcher so i can access the earlier breakup of my bandmaster for leads-problem solved.The amp that fits your styles is a MARSHALL, and once you get one, you can feel good about your tone and not worry about it any more. :smoker:

ok seriously......just go for a Fender Pro Reverb dude...that's gonna end your search I think....40 watts, 6L6...crank the hell out of it and you're gonna get that Fender cranked crunch that you're after, roll back the volume on your guitar for clean.....

Two options, kid:

-continue chasing your tail on hare-brained schemes and piss off various forum members that have been saintly in their patience up to this point.

-or save up for/trade on a Fender Bassbreaker. May be hard to find, but you'll love it.
