Peavey MX VTX Series - What do ya know?

Kac

Hootersologist
I bought one on eBay... Less than $600 including shipping for the half-stack, so I figured I'd give it a try.

Anyone know anything about 'em? I'll give my full report and review on it next weekend.

Peavey Scorpion speakers in the 4X12 cabinet. Both head and cab are built into flight cases.
Four 6L6 Power tubes...

This is the one I bought:

I used to have one of those!!!

It wasn't actually mine it belonged to my drummers dad but I used it when we played at his house...I didn't have the switch so I rean it in crunch mode all the time...I remember it being very heavy and loud as hell! At the time I used whatever guitars I could borrow from anybody else since all Ihad was an acoustic at that time. I played it through a 2x12 Bassman cab loade wihta pair of EVM12L's and got a HUGE Earth moving bass heavy tone...not unlike early Soundgarden (which was very alright with me at that time!).

Awesome amp!I have two VTX's(combo's).Mine are a 4X6l6 heritage and a 2X6l6 Classic. Both with stock Scorps. Real Decent cleans. If your has the built in phaser its one of the best phasers ever. Thats been said time and time again and again by VTX owners.
I guess yours also has the solid state pre-amp.
What I keep em for is the Insane distortion. It aint sophisticated like a botique hi-gain, and its not like pushing a Marshall with a Screamer or a Ratt. Its just unique and fantastic! They usd to be everywhere, but its not so awefully easy to find em anymore for a decent price.

Hey Bro, thanks for the info, it's nice to hear some good words about these amps! I really can't wait till this weekend...

Re: Peavey MX VTX Series - What do ya know?

Soundgarden used the VTM, so I guess that isn't miles away from their sound.

Re: Peavey MX VTX Series - What do ya know?

it might sound good but man that thing is ugly.
You know... I can't name one aesthetically pleasing Peavey amp. Their designers fail at making a boutique looking amplifier :p

But I LOVE Peavey and honestly can't see myself playing anything else... They're cheap, easy to manage, and sound great... Just hideous. That's all.

Actually, it does sound very different. The VTX's from the early to mid 80's have a solid state preamp. The VTM's from roughly the late 80's are much closer to a JCM 800 type sound.

I used to own a Peavey Heritage (VTM series) back in the day. A decent amp, though I don't really miss it.

Re: Peavey MX VTX Series - What do ya know?

I can't personally vouch for the MX however, I did have the SS pre - tube power model Heritage (2x12 combo) in the 1984 to 1986 range. I've confessed here before that I traded a JCM800 in to get it. The Heritage just seemed to offer a lot more varied tones than I could ever get out of that Marshall. Although back then, I didn't realize the knobs on my guitars actually worked below 10...

jerryjg is right on the great phaser too. Plus, pulling it out and manually sweeping it offered still even more tonal possibilities.

You will find those with no love for Peaveys. I on the other hand, still miss mine. Lots of variety in that amp.

Debadge em and take off those silly side aluminum strips and youve got a boss ( tahts was a word we used i the 70's lol)lookin rig.

Re: Peavey MX VTX Series - What do ya know?

The MX is a very serviceable amp. I think the ratting was 120WRMS from a 4x6L6 power section and a SS preamp. The are loud and very punchy sounding. The Peavey amps from this era have a very focused, mid-range tonality. You don't have the "airiness" of a Fender amp, or that deep bass--or the aggressive upper mids of the Marshalls. But it will produce some good useable tones, and be nearly bullet-proof while doing it.

Great find.
