Peavey Revalver HP - first impressions

Well I got myself a copy of Peavey's mgagic virtual amp thing.
This is mainly so I don't have to set my rig up to play my guitar and also so I could record stuff without messing about with microphones and cables and stuff.
Now I got myself the HP 'evalution' edition as it was less than £50, which is cheap in my book, so I've only effectively got four different amps to play with and a few stomp boxes. You can, I've been lead to understand, easily update to the full version at a later date if you choose.
First impression is that this is a pretty decent sounding bit of kit, tad scooped in the mids for some reason, but it does sound like a proper amp.
What I also noticed is that's it's sodding noisy. I don't mean a little bit of mains hum but shed loads of squelchy digital originated noise that oddly diminishes when you start playing. Obviously this gets worse the more gain you use. Apparently this is less of a problem on the fall version which makes me a tad suspicious of Peavey marketing.
Another down side is the controls that are not that easy to get to grips with.
Another issue, and this is more with Cubase than revalver, is that when recording you don't seem to be able to monitor what revalver is doing so you play clean and then play it back and it sounds completely different.
I did try running revalver at the same time as Cubase but that just didn't work as they're both a bit resource heavy and thus both had a bit of a hissy fit.
Next thing to try is the pre-amp out of my Ashdown into revalver to see how that sounds.

You should be able to click the monitor button and you will hear the guitar going through the plugins. I thought it worked for me when I tried with amplitube.

I'm a longtime Amplitube user, and I'm constantly amazed at the tones that are possible when you spend some time dialing it in. I got it during one of those buy-one-get-another-free promotions, like the one that's running now, and got the Amplitube 2 full version with a free Jimi Hendrix version. Both are great.

I thought the ReValver looked interesting, since it allows some cool customizations, like circuit mod types of adjustments. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm sure it works much like Amplitube for being able to monitor your wet signal as you're playing. Does the manual have any suggestions for using it with Cubase? I assume you got Amplitube to work ok as a plug-in, and that the same settings didn't work for revalver.
As far as the noise goes, check the effect pedal sections, there may be something cranked up there. The amp models and effects work pretty much like the real things as far as noise vs. gain goes. It shouldn't be any worse than a live rig, if you have the levels set up reasonably.

I can't see a monitor button to press :)

It's probably me being rubbish really

On the actual audio track. I'm used to Cubase LE though other versions may be different. Its next to the arm track button.

I've been using Amplitube 2 for a while now too. Very decent amp simulations.
While Amplitube 2 has the essential Fender, Vox, Marshall and Boogie Rectifier simulations, as well as solid state amps and THD Uni-valve (?), there are some I wish it had. Why no Boogie Mark 1? And correct me if I'm mistaken, but the Marshall sim in Amplitube is a JCM-800. I'd love a classic 70's Marshall simulation. Or a 60's Plexi.
It's also missing a Hiwatt. No authentic Gilmour tones.
But to the point: I wish it had a 5150, XXX and/or JSX model. None are included in Amplitube 2. You have to get Amplitube Metal to get a 5150 simulation.

Revalver (full version) got a great review in one of my guitar mags, saying that it felt and responded more like a real amp than any amp sim software to date. And it has some of the cool amps that other amp sims are missing - the 5150, the XXX and the JSX. That's disappointing to hear that it's noisy, because it's on my wish list.

Well it does state that the full version does not have as many noise issues... which sounds like a marketing ploy to me.

The HP does make some pretty decent noises mind and it's only when you crank up the gain that the noise becomes a real issue.
Still not had chance to try any out board gear in the line to see how it copes.

Haven't used the Peavey software but I do have Amplitube Metal, as well as Guitar Rig 3. Hands down, GR3 is the clear winner. There are way more useful amps and the cpu usage is dramatically less. In any case, good luck with your search!

Hmm, I'd forgotten about the 1959 super lead model in amplitube jimi hendrix... i'm going to have to check that out again. I primarily use Amplitube 2 models for everything.
