Peavey Scorpions

Re: Peavey Scorpions

I'm getting a Peavey 2x12 cab loaded with them, and if I don't like 'em I'll be selling them on here!:D

Re: Peavey Scorpions

I ve had and still do have a bunch of Scorps.
They are rated at about 15o watts continous, 300 peak . The newer scorpion+'s have bigger magnets and handle more power, but probably dont sound as good.
These Scorpion speakers have replaceable baskets in case they get damaged or fried.
...Cheaper to find used speakers and cones than new replacemant baskets.
The Scorpion has a LOT of useable and PUNCHY low end.
Its quite appealing cause if you get 4 of them in a cabinet, it makes for a substantial low end drive. They also clean up in a fairly civilised manner.
To be honest, I never thought they sounded 1/2 as good as the flagship Peavey Black Widow, which are much more desirable, and in my opinion for very good reason
The Scorpions are very underrated budget speakers though, and you can find very good deals on 2x12 sets on Ebay, and I would call them a "Poor mans EV12l".
(In fact, I think thhats probably what they were designed to be).
Scorpions are very good speakers, but the Black Widows are in a diifferent league in my estimation.
In fact, I would go as far as to call the Black Widow a great speaker in its own right. One thing about the Widow is that it has its own unique sound, which i think is great.

And black widows, how much do the go for these days?
They arent cheap, morever, they arent that easy to find, even compared to an EV12l ifrom my experience.
Best deals are on pairs.
I think they range at less than the EV's on average, but again, are more scarce.
Probably a single will run close to 100.00 plus shipping(wheres a EV12l will typically go for around a buck and a quarter plus shipping).
I love the Widow, and yearn for a 4x12 Black Widow cabinet.

Re: Peavey Scorpions

I always thought they sounded like a Black Widow with a blanket thrown over it.

"Very good speakers" is not how I would describe them. "They're okay, I guess" would be more fitting, in my opinion.

Re: Peavey Scorpions

This is what I am looking for my JCM900 cab to sound like, with "invadered" strat and SpinaTS9 pushed Laney AOR
"I want really tight, thick, and BRIGHT low end for palm mutes, very englsque with rammstainish thump of sortsBut I also want very warm and glossy cleans think Richie Blackmore "Catch the Rainbow" and more importantly I want full of mids pick harmonics not over the top highs pick harmonics, not zakkish PHs but more like George Lynch/Criss Oliva, I want as much of a violin in neck SC, think Uli Roth/YJM/Blackmore/Trower. Over all I want it bright and heavy but by no means scooped."

This is the description I used here in reference to Emi speakers, but on thegearpage I was told that the Scorpion might give me this tone, but also it was mentioned that Scoprs are derrivative of Black Widow.

I'll meet you in the middle on that. Id say they are a little better than OK, and not quite very good,
I think they call that "good".

Im not sure if youre gonna find one speaker to cover all that area.Maybe mixing speaks would get you closer?
Maybe a mix of EmI pats and EMi Redcoats or something.
Man o wars will do bright and heavey If im not mistaken.
Just a guess.

Re: Peavey Scorpions

The Scorpion makes a far better Guitar speaker than the BW. For Bass tho, the BW Slays. I have a Peavey 118 cab with a single 18" Widow. My bassist uses it for his bass pedal rig and I've used it for guitar. Very smooth and pleasant, but not really tight for distortion/palm muting...

The BWs work really well in a PA application with a good horn.

Re: Peavey Scorpions

Try earcandy's green machines... I like them much better than my EVs that I had! Great speaker!

Re: Peavey Scorpions

Theres some fans of the Scorps.believe it or not. At worst youll get a big heavey bottm end punch. I belive all the fans of Peavey Scorpions say the Scorps sound better than the Widows.
I had a Widow loaded cab. and it was cool sounding. The speaker imparted its own charecter to the sound, which may not be for everyone, but I sure liked it, and would like to have it again.
