Peavey Triple XXX or JSX owners???

hi everyone...

i´m selling my marshall asap to go back to a hi gain amp, and was thinking about the peavey ones, 6505, triple xxx and the joe satriani signature amp...

i tried the 6505 head, and, although it sounds good, i want a 3 channel amp, and like peavey sound, so... any owner of any of the amps can give me a good review, please? (not like harmony central, which are very weird ones, one takes the amp to heaven, and the next tells crap out of any of them)

i would like to hear something about the fat and the noise gate of the joe satriani amp...if they are usefull or not, which one sounds better clean... and so...

thanks a lot guys

The JSX sounds sweet for leads, not tight enough for rythym if you are looking towards high gain. Plus its not that high gain of an amp, its a little more vintage voiced IMO. Cleans are nice, but i couldnt tell much of a difference with the fat switches. Noise gate works well too. I liked the amp when i played it, its just the rythym isnt tight enough. I played a DSL100 locally and the JSX is way looser in comparison. Both sounded pretty good, but if you are looking for tone the JSX kicked its butt. Hope that helped.

Considered the 6505+? It's not a true 3 channel head, but it's damned close. Add in an OD (I would, anyways), and you basically have it with a bit of setting up beforehand.

That said, the JSX is like a smoother XXX, but most people I've talked to have come to the conclusion that it just isn't brutal enough to handle metal, and most replaced them with 5150's. The only one who didn't, actually, replaced it with a Dual Rectifier and a 5150II.

yes i´m also considering that one (and a dual recto also...but there is a great reason for seeing something else also, money...) so i´m finding something with a good clean, but a hi gain distortion, at least one, cause the other one will be used more like a vintage sound... and of course individual eqs, which i haven´t with the marshall...

i´m considering more options like engl heads...

thanks a lot for the replies...

Re: Peavey Triple XXX or JSX owners???

I haven't owned any of them, but I gave the JSX a good test drive a couple of months ago. I was quite impressed. I didn't have enough time to thouroughly test everything, but I really liked the noise gate. Very useful, IMO, and I really liked the tone with and without it. The cleans were great and I liked the other channels as well. They're geared more toward a marshall sound than a mesa. I prefer it, but if you're looking for that mesa kind of overdrive you might not be happy with it.

Just my short experience with it. I'd like to run it some more, but I'm really thinking about picking one up.

Re: Peavey Triple XXX or JSX owners???

JSX's are very flexible. when i played one, i could dial in a ton of sounds on the ultra and crunch channels. I find that my 6505+ has basically one sound that the eq enhances. Oh and the clean channel on the JSX is very good from my experience playing it.

Re: Peavey Triple XXX or JSX owners???

The JSX is about the only Peavey I've ever been really impressed with. I actually got to mess around with one and it was quiet flexible with some nice tones.

Re: Peavey Triple XXX or JSX owners???

I just got a mint used XXX 212 about 2 weeks ago for $575.
The active EQ is great on the crunch and ultra channels and
gives a pretty big variety of tones from just those channels alone.
The clean is perfectly acceptable in my opinion, though some
wont think the same. I believe the XXX has a similar noise gate
on the 2 distorted channels as the JSX if that's a concern.

I haven't played a JSX, but I've heard people say that the XXX
is sort of a combination of the features and better cleans of the
JSX with the higher gains of the 5150. YMMV though.

Re: Peavey Triple XXX or JSX owners???

Hmmm, JSX is smoother than the XXX, yet I believe it belive its fat tone is perfect for a chunkier metal tone as opposed to a crunchier metal tone. I compared it side by side to a TSL half stack and the JSX just slayed it in tone and gain, not to mention versitility. Plus it doesnt have some of the tonal properties that I hate from XXX and none of the white noise the 5150 has.

Re: Peavey Triple XXX or JSX owners???

I played through a 2X12 XXX and 2X12 JSx just the other day. My main reason for going was to try out and compare delay pedals, but I did take note of each amps strengths/weaknesses. I also played through a Stiletto head and a Rect-O-Verb combo as well.

The XXX combo is not as compressed as the XXX head and i found that to be a good thing. The clean channel is decent and the crunch channel is a lot of fun. I had nor need for the Ultra channel. The clean channel is a bit thin sounding and a bit sterlile. I played my 89 Les Paul and 97 Heritage H150CM through all the amps.

The JSX is less compressed and more dynamic than the XXX combo. That was a very good thing. The clean channel is warm shimmery and cuts through great. I found the Crunch channel to be thin sounding and playing with the resonance and presence controls did not fatten it up and the fat switch just made it a bit muddy. The Ultra channel is decent and close to the Crunch channel of the XXX, but with a bit more gain.

Funny, both of these Peavey Amps were better than the Mesa amps. I think the XXX with EL 34s and 1 or 2 lower gain preamp tubes would make it a darn good amp. Now I admit the Stiletto can sound good, but it takes a good cab (i.e. not a Rectifier cab) and needs to be played very, very loud. I also had brought along my Rivera S120 head and loved the Fender-ish cleans of channel II and the Marshall tones- from Plexi to 2100 SLX crunch & grind that it is capable of. The Rivera is simply a better amp than all the others. Just MHO and YMMV.

a DSL doesn't have enough gain for you?:eek13:

I'm not a big fan of Peavey tube amps, but I'd go Fiddy-one-fiddy if I was to buy one. I thought the XXX was very compressed and just lackluster in tone overall, almost a (bad) SS type vibe to it. Have not tried the JSX.
