I'm possibly looking into a tube head to try. These really spark my interest as well as the VTM, but the VTM hasn't a clean channel so it's eh. I'm looking for a amp that will chug a LOT chug chug is good. Warm sounding, a little modern. Tones like Symphony X, Dream Theater, Extreme....harmonic and not scooped. What can you tell me bout this head?

Re: Peavey Ultra 120?

I've owned the Ultra 120. It was a nice amp, but I didn't own it long enough to scratch the surface of its possibilities. The colors are funky as all hell on it, which may or may not be a good thing for you.

It got pretty high gain... I never used it at home, it was always at my drummer's house so I got to use it basically only when we practiced. With the right cab, I'm sure it would sound better than what I had. The cleans were ok, kinda fat but nothing inspiring. More like "it gets the job done" style cleans. The crunch channel is ok, but its preamp crunch so it's useless IMO. I mean, if you've got the funds available go ahead and give it a shot, I'm not you so I dont know if you'll like it more or less than the attax. But the tone on the videos of yours I've seen with the Attax (the more recent ones with Eden's Way) is probably as good as the peavey. The peavey may be louder (perceived to be louder cause of the tubes), but be warned, that amp is a SONOFAGUN to work on. It's like peavey didnt make any design considerations for the extra width due to the tolex... it is damn near impossible to slide the chassis out, and it must have taken me 45 minutes to change tubes (trying to figure out where to open the thing up).

Maybe give it a shot?

Re: Peavey Ultra 120?

What you need(judging by your tone in the clips and your playing style) would be a Engl Ritchie Blackmore head. That should give you four channels with everything you need, including great cleans.
