Peavey Ultra Plus Head on eBay

Re: Peavey Ultra Plus Head on eBay

Good, but not great. Weak in the gain, IMO, and it isn't on par with the 5150/XXX.

Re: Peavey Ultra Plus Head on eBay

I like the amp's low to medium gain tones. Pretty good if you get your high gain tones from a pedal.

LOL...it pretty much IS a XXX. they based the XXX off the ultra plus and side by side they sound VERY similar. it has TONS of gain, dual recto amounts if needed (i own both as you know DSS3). it does clean real well and medium gain well too along with high gain. it also works well at real low volume which is a plus and being 120W it can be real loud if needed also. to say it's not on par with a 5150 or XXX is 110% wrong! sorry bro but i have owned one since they were new and i know what it can do and it certainly can do eveything a XXX can do.

i own several amps, one being an Ultra Plus and it's one amp i won't sell. i say go for it, it's a great low $ amp IMO.

Re: Peavey Ultra Plus Head on eBay

Hmmm interesting testimonial XSSIVE... I'm VERY tempted to bid on it as it's a damn good price for a 3-channel tube amp, and I'm sure it would be an improvement over my Randall. Plus it's being called the "poor man's Recto". But should I try for it? :smack:

Re: Peavey Ultra Plus Head on eBay

look at it this way, they tend to stay fairly low in price so if you got it and it was lets say, 90% what you wanted, you could have it modded to 100% what you want and still be out less cash than a dual recto or similar. just a thought.

i can only speak for myself but i'm happy with my (stock) ultra plus!!

Sorry man, but I can't hear the XXX tone in it. It sounds like an old Peavey to me, but not like an XXX.

It does have tons of gain, but it just doesnt sound very good IMO. If it's on par with the 5150 and XXX, why hasn't it been used on more records or tours? I've played them many times before selling my XXX for the 5150, and they just simply crushed it. Tighter, thicker, cleaner, clearer, and more defined.

Re: Peavey Ultra Plus Head on eBay

Once again, it doesent work for you but, you play EMG's with a 7 string through a fart cannon. The readers of this thread should possibly take that into consideration. I am not dogging it but, its just different than what alot of folks play.

With all due respect, my Marshall 2100 MKIII is in the same league but, the 4 or 5 of us on this board that have one swear by it! Just a hidden and overlooked jem!

It was replaced too quickly with the XXX which is a shame, and it kinda was barely a blip on the radar... I remember when they came out. I love the colour changing logo too...

Re: Peavey Ultra Plus Head on eBay

i used to own the Ultra Plus head- superb with the right cab. i'm saying this because i first plugged it into Fender's Tone Master 4X12- sounds weak, lacking bottom end. then switched to Randall 4X12: killer.

however, have sold it off, playing Peavey's XXL now.

Re: Peavey Ultra Plus Head on eBay

Several great points made, thanks guys. The colour-changing logo thing is also a cool plus.

The biggest problem I see with getting this head is that I would have to buy a cabinet too, as I've never owned anything other than a combo. However I suppose that doesn't come at too hefty a price. I'll definitely have a talk with the parents before I actually bid on it though.

Any other thoughts? Auction time is running out...

So what if I play 7 strings and EMG's through a Recto? How is a Recto a fart cannon? You obviously haven't spent enough time tweaking one to call it a fart cannon. I happen to get a very, very tight tone out of my setup. Just because I play 7's, EMG's, and a Recto doesn't mean it's all downtuned nü-metal crap. You have this stupid stereotype in your head about downtuning, EMG's, and Recto's, and I request you stop spreading this bull**** propaganda. The tone I get is way tighter than if I were to use Duncan's, 6's, or Marshalls, as well.

If you weren't dogging me, then why did you word it like you did? How is that not dogging me?

It may be different from what a lot of folks play, but take into account this guy is going to be playing extreme metal, something very few on this board play or understand, so readers may want to take that into account when reading this.

Dude, dogging or not. Rectumfriers have become more of a joke than anything. EMGs well....I'll not go there. I won't say a thing about 7 stringers cuz I want one, but I will say that most people that use them, only use 3 strings on them. If that sh*t works for you, so be it. But no need to get your man thong tied in knots because someone sees it differently. I'll give ya props you at least your gear to it's full potential. I'd still like hear plug into an Engl, VHT, or RIvera.

LOL! I nearly spit my pepsi out of my nose on that one!

I've played ENGL's, Rivera's, and VHT's, and while I'd love a VHT, I prefer my Recto overall. ENGL's were oversaturated/under-midded for the technical playing I do, and the Rivera's just weren't my bag. VHT's sound amazing for leads, and I do want one, but the Recto sounds better for rhythm, and still has a nice lead tone.

I don't see how Recto's have become a joke; they're still used ALL THE TIME to produce amazing sounding metal albums. Most people don't know how to set them up right, though.

Also, that's total bull**** about the 7 strings. Most people who use them shred the **** out of them.

EMG's are a personal preference. We can debate about that forever, but nobody can disagree that they sound tighter than Duncans.

No need to get my man thong tied in a knot? I get nothing but **** from most of you guys on this forum most of the time; the same guys who say this is the best forum on the net. He see's it differently than I, but he could also word it less like a complete *******.

My argument still stands though; most people here don't play extreme metal, and therefore aren't qualified to give advice for or against on the subject.

With all due respect......no, F that at this point! When ever someone has a thread asking opinions on gear, pickups, whatever, you always have this attitude that it MUST be a Schecter, a Fart Cannon, and EMG's! Usually no matter what the author of the thread is looking for! Basically it seems that you think that author wants you sound, and plays your exact style of cookie monster metal! Most of the times I will honestly say that that is probally not the case!

In addition to the argument of the so called "extreme metal" only being played on the low 3 strings, I read an interview a few years ago where Dime and Zakk more or less agreed that they were the only ones at Ozzfest that used more than 2 or 3 strings. Now ozzfest, isnt most of the bands there metal, extreme metal, cookie monster sh1t, metal masterbation, etc.? I certainly think that is infact the case!

I don't have time to get into a ****ing pissing match with you, dude. I look for people who play metal, and suggest what I think would work best for them. I have many times suggested other amps, such as a VHT, 5150, or XXX, to people looking for something different. I will, of course, defend my "fart cannon" if it's knocked, though, just as you'd defend your beloved JCM900.

People ask for the best cheap axes? I'll recommend Schecter. I honestly think they make the best cheap axes. If people want a good, tight, thick metal tone, I will suggest EMG's, because I have been up and down the Duncan line and not found a pickup that I like.

Cookie monster is such a bull**** term... you just can't get past the vocals, which only shows a narrow-minded attitude. I'm not saying that I'm not narrowminded myself, because I am. I'm the pickiest ****er I know, but I don't knock what you listen to.

Ozzfest is a ****ing joke. If you want to make a more logical comparison, try Wacken Open Air. Also, check out http://www.sevenstring.org. It's absolute BULLSH!T that the most 7 stringers in the past whatever years have been ****ty numetal dowtuned chuggers. The best lineup Ozzfest had was last years, and you may use that as an example. Most of the guitarists last year could play circles around Zakk.

Recto's + EMG's = NU Metal

So Testament, Nevermore, Behemoth, Decapitated, Dragonlord, Ensiferum, Wintersun, Meshuggah, Metallica, Obituary, Satyricon, Strapping Young Lad, The Devin Townsend Band, and the Black Dahlia Murder are numetal? Right.
