Peavey Valve King VK100, Thoughts?

Pros and Cons? How's the Distortion? How's the Clean? Sturdy amp?

This guy on CL that's selling his is willing to trade it for a MIJ or USA guitar with a Tremolo. I have a warmoth strat that I dont really play that I'll be willing to trade for it. Should I offer my strat for it? The amp is in MINT condition too.

Re: Peavey Valve King VK100, Thoughts?

I think they sound like they have a blanket over them and the preamp gain is harsh. I would pass.

Re: Peavey Valve King VK100, Thoughts?

What he said. Definitely not worth a trade for a USA made guitar, especially a Warmoth. If you don't play the Warmoth guitar, sell it and use the funds for a nicer amp.

Re: Peavey Valve King VK100, Thoughts?

Had one, and with tube changes they can sound pretty darn good for most rock styles. That being said, they're nowhere near the same value as a US strat. Warmoths are tough because the resale isn't as high as the quality suggests. To give you an idea, I sold mine a few months ago and it was in excellent condition. Got $300 for it, with footswitch.

Re: Peavey Valve King VK100, Thoughts?

Now your talking.

Yes for Marshall, HELL NO for VK

I dot know why I contemplated for the Peavey or the Marshall.....
I'm just waiting for the guy to let me know if he accepts my offer.. He seemed to really like my strat!

This is what I'm gonna trade for the 900:

Re: Peavey Valve King VK100, Thoughts?

Wish I had something to trade with you, I've been thinking about building that exact guitar!

Re: Peavey Valve King VK100, Thoughts?

Which JCM900? I have a Hi-Gain Master Volume MkIII, which is the model that preceded the SL-X, and it rips! I personally liked it a lot more than the 50 watt Hi-Gain Dual Reverb model [which is a two channel version - this sounded good, but a bit too modern for me]. Mine is a single channel with two master volumes [one for normal play, the other for a solo boost].

I don't know what you put into the Warmoth, but my Marshall cost me $600 shipped to me. I would say the trade value is around $500-$600 depending on condition.

By the way, that Warmoth Strat is cool!

Thanks Cole!
I'm gonna trade for a Marshall JCM900 50 watt Hi Gain dual reverb. I played one and feel I love with it. Especially with a TS9 in front! Sounded sweet!

That is great to hear! They do sound good, especially with some volume! Do you know if your head is the 5881 or EL34 model?

Re: Peavey Valve King VK100, Thoughts?

It's the 5881 model

The reason I asked, is because people would find that there amp should have EL34s or 5881s, when they thought it was the other. In my research, I found that some of the boards of amp were designed to handle the 5881, even though it was supposed to be EL34 [and vice versa]. If you experience troubles biasing the amp to correct values, it could be that it was designed for the other tube.

This plays a big part in the way the amp sounds! Also, do you use any effects in the effects loop? If not, run a patch cable from the send to the return and turn the volume of the loop to around 11 o'clock. This turns the amp into a beast!

Thanks for that! On the amp itself it says "5881". I'll ask the guy if he had any trouble biasing the amp. I do run quite a few pedals through the Loop. So I'll keep that in mind also!

Thanks Cole

If you run pedals in the loop, it will work as if you are jumping the effects loop. So you shouldn't have any worries there! Congrats, you are going to love that amp!

May I ask, what cab/speakers are you going to be using with it?

Well I haven't got it yet. So talking with the guy.......
I have a Seismic 2x12 made out of Birchwood and WGS Veteran 30s (vintage 30s copies, that I think sound better) that's waiting to get this head! Speakers are nice and broken in too! Also have EVH 5150 2x12 cab also that I might put this head tru also.

The Veteran 30 is a great speaker, and I loved how it sounded with my Marshall DSL. I personally think that the Veteran 30 will complement the JCM900 very well. I am not familiar with the build/quality of Seismic Audio stuff, so I can't comment on the overall sound you will get; as well with the 5150 cab. That being said, I am pretty sure you will enjoy the Veteran 30 with it!

I expect to see some pictures upon arrival =D

Haha... that is great! When I got my Marshall, I had to wait for my custom made cabinet to be shipped to me... It was rough to say the least!

Re: Peavey Valve King VK100, Thoughts?

Had a VK212. It was needing waranty work all of the time and you couldn't tube change that thing into a modern sounding amp. Anything would be better. Good luck man.
