How much of a difference would it make if i switched from a line 6 spider 2x10 to a peavey valveking 2x12?

Would it be worth it to sell my spider for $200-300, and buy the Valveking?

I gig alot so it wont just be a bedroom amp

thanks

Re: Peavey ValveKing vs. Line 6 Spider

Yeah it will be worth it ,but just remember ,if you use the effects and different tones on spider ,Valve king will dissapoint you.But if you are a Pedal/two channels and Rockn' Roll kind of guy ,it will make you happy!

Re: Peavey ValveKing vs. Line 6 Spider

Get the Valveking and then get some effects pedals if you use all of them...the Valvekings tone blows the spiders out of the water!

Re: Peavey ValveKing vs. Line 6 Spider

the effects r fun to mess around with but i find little use for them in songs

i really just need a nice clean channel and some nice heavy distortion/overdrive

would i need a distortion or OD pedal or is the valveking's pretty good?

Re: Peavey ValveKing vs. Line 6 Spider

I had the 1x12 50w VK and wasn't knocked out with the distortion but the clean is fine. So maybe your favorite distortion pedal with it.

Re: Peavey ValveKing vs. Line 6 Spider

dude dont get a valveking ~ they sound like complete ass! just save more and get a better amp! even a vox valvetronix smokes the valvekings!

Re: Peavey ValveKing vs. Line 6 Spider

As far as tube tone goes, the Valveking will smoke the Spider. The Valveking desperately needs to be retubed with JJ's to sound good. The speakers are ok though. I tried replacing them with Celestions and did not hear enough difference to leave them in. The clean channel is not Fender Clean if you need that. I run the Gain boost switch on all the time on the gain channel, even when I am using very little distortion. It just seems to open the channel up more having it on. I really don't see anything wrong with the valveking, and for the price its a great amp. If you play it before the tube change, and spend no time tweaking the controls, especially the ones on the back (cabinet depth and class a/ab) then yes, it may not sound great. But then, neither will a Mesa Stiletto Ace which costs four times as much.

If I were going with a modeler for the effects, I would get a Vox Valvetronix 50 or 100 watt. If you had a little more cash, stepping up to the Vox Ad60vtx is an even better choice, being more flexible and more authentic sounding. Just depends on what you need....

Re: Peavey ValveKing vs. Line 6 Spider

Go for the 5150. But between the Line 6 and the Valve King, you may want to head to a store and try them out. The Line 6 is a solid state amp with advanced processing features, and the Valve King is a stripped-down, low-end tube amp. I am one who believes that a high-quality solid state amp is more worth having than an crappy tube amp. That being said, I would choose the VK over the Line 6, but I would still go with the 5150 for such an awesome price.

Re: Peavey ValveKing vs. Line 6 Spider

i'd either get the valveking or maybe spend some time lookin at other cheaper options. I mean a used 5150 for $600 is cool but you could get a new Peavey Windsor head for $500. And if you're gettin to the point where you can spend $600 then I know somebody who's trying to get rid of a 120watt Peavey Butcher for half that. Just gotta look around.

Re: Peavey ValveKing vs. Line 6 Spider

Just as a note, the 5150 is a US made sweet amp. Peavey had the Triple X, JSX, and the 5150/6505 as their top of the line tube amps before they started overseas amp production with items like the ValveKing and Windsor. If you are looking for good tone with plenty of gain in a well built tube amp, the used 5150 is a steal vs. a new ValveKing or Windsor. The 5150 is in a completely different league (the professional one)!

If you like amps with a decent amount of gain, then the Butcher may not be the tone you are looking for.

+1! I couldn't really tell a difference in tone at bedroom(ish) volumes, but when cranked up the Vavlekings totally own the line 6s!
