So this thing has become my project over the past several days, keep messing with a few things. So to date, here is what I have done.

Remove 470k resistor and 470pf off of the input to master. I replaced the resistor with a 33K after messing with a few values. .

I clipped the bright cap off of the master volume.

In the pre section ( amp is in 4 different wired sections of circuit board, easy to mess with once disconnected, but tough for me to identify what is what..... because of this and my lack of official tech knowledge, I don't know the official name of the caps I replaced in the next tweak. I generally do one thing at a time and depending if I like it or not, I move on or put it back stock)) I replaced one of the .022 caps, with a .033 I left the other at .022 It is the cap nearest to V1 on the left side of the pre section, not the O.C. cap on the right... . The goal was a bit more bottom and grind and warmth). I clipped the 470Pf ceramic in this section too, liked how it sounded better...

For this clip, I have the gain 1 dip switch clicked on, all the other mod switches are off. Master dimed, Pre 5 or so. Bass 2, Mid 9, Treble 0, Presence 10. To my ears, the amp is much smoother, fatter and responds more like a non master amp. There is a ton of gain on tap, if I choose to use it. For fun, I replaced the gain 2 boost switch .68 cap with a 330. Tons of sustain and sounds great with the pre rolled back, so if I need the crazy nu metal thing, it is there.

Useing Sino 5881 tubes in it.

Have a PZM about 8 feet back into the same Traynor cab I used on the other clip.... Tried to get close to how I had it set up.... Anyway, really likeing the amp and might be close to done with it, now that it sounds more open. Weber mass and a Strat with a High Order pickup is being used.

Re: Peavey VTM clip # 2 (More tweaks)

The amp sounds a good deal more open than I remember from the last clip. Bit more room to breathe in there, I like it :). Though I'm hearing a bit of clipping on the track.

that amp is so responsive to volume/pups...real treat to listen to the playa with skills/soul rip on that thang - nice

Thanks man,

I rushed it a bit last night, I will see if I can dial that out.

That was my number one goal, to get it to really respond to nuance. It does so much better with a neck pickup and cleans up w/o the muck it used to have....

Thanks for the kind words man.:smokin:

Sounds great! I dragged mine out of the closet recently and put a mix of hi-gain graded preamp tubes in it and it sounds far better than I remember it ever did. Where are you getting the mod information? Is there a website on it?

Hey Thanks!! That amp is well worth messing with. The 470k resistor 470 pf cap removal between the input jacks and volume, is known as the JCM 800 warming mod. The rest of the stuff was me tinkering til it worked, not too much stuff. I was mainly removing stuff that made it too bright and nasal. Then added a .033 cap for a bigger, fatter sound. It only took one, so I kinda got lucky....

Re: Peavey VTM clip # 2 (More tweaks)

I've thought about trying some THD Yellow Jackets in this and other amps I own. Never tried 'em but I like the concept.
