Peavey VTM vid clip after tweaks....

Bullet Proof Toneologist

Finally got a chance to make a clip of the VTM 60 post tweaks.... Stock I find these amps just like the 80s Laney Pro Tubes, which is too much in the upper mids. I like a more vintage and open voice. Clipped bright cap, went to 33k on the input resistors, and .68 on the presence cap. Tossed a 12au7 in 1 and 4 and then tossed a set of RCA 6l6 in the amp. The high gain channel does exactly what I want, which is to respond to every nuance of the guitar, clean up when the volume is rolled back, and roar when needed. This amp now covers all my vintage needs, and still has all the boosts, and tons more gain on tap, even with the 12au7 tubes. Master is dimed, the pre is only around 3, so there is plenty more if I want it. I am not really seeing a need for a bias pot, or a switch to EL34s, it has plenty of British snarl as is...

Re: Peavey VTM vid clip after tweaks....

Aside from the warming tweaks, that amp LOVES a couple lower gain pre tubes. In many of my amps, I lose all the grind and sustain, in this amp, it just takes all the 80s out of it... A good thing IMO.

Great stuff Kev!!!

I used to have a VTM 120 and it was sort of cool for some stuff but it was no where near that cool!

Nice work.

Re: Peavey VTM vid clip after tweaks....

Thanks much, what pissed me off about the VTM and Pro tube, is that I had no idea where the mid spike was coming from. Back in the day, I simply assumed an amp did what it did.... I guess as the 80s progressed the tinnitus and bad hearing found its way into the engineering dept..... Once you relax that amp just a touch, it sounds as good as the stuff it tried to imitate.... Where the Laney is pretty comparable in build to an 800 in terms of general quality, the VTM has a dodgy build quality, but I have never killed one in nearly 30 years of abusing em..

Re: Peavey VTM vid clip after tweaks....

Sounded fantastic! Would love to hear some really high gain grunting beast tones if you could manage it :)

Re: Peavey VTM vid clip after tweaks....

Best sounding VTM I ever heard!!
Muy cool as usual Mr K!

Yep. While definitely not your most mojotastic amp, you sure improved the hell out of that VTM, Kev.

Love your new tele, and as always I have a bro-mance with your playing style :D

Thanks much! While I can assure it is there, I don't know if I have the skills for a decent mega gain demo. You still have 2 gain boosts, and a mid boost you could engage, you could roll the pre up and also if really inclined, you could go 12Ax7s in all positions. It will be a super juiced Marshall voice all the way..

Thanks! Now I kind think that a lack of mojo makes for MORE mojo. That is the true power of a shizzy amp.

You could probably play through an axe fx and make it sound good... Tehehehe. Awesome stuff. Always enjoy your posts!

That's what I'm actually torn about in regards to mods on my Butcher. I've gotten so used to that midrange thing over the years that I might actually miss it.

Re: Peavey VTM vid clip after tweaks....

That sounds REALLY good! What is the wattage on that amp? And how loud did you have it?

I liked the Rush-ish bits w the echo at the end. :)

Re: Peavey VTM vid clip after tweaks....

+1

also I like the licks at 2:52

I dare you to 'hit' one of your amps with a fuzz pedal in a next clip soon! :)

Re: Peavey VTM vid clip after tweaks....

Actually, now that I listen again, it is kinda Rush-ish (Didacts & Narpets) and kinda Queen-ish (Prophet's Song). :)

That is the beauty of tone. If your ears dig it, ain't no reason to change...
