Title says it all
Vypyr will do blues and metal pretty well. It's one of the better digital modeling amps. The 12" speaker will probably sound better than the 8" speaker on the Blackstar (if you're looking at the combo.)
I used to own a Vypyr 30, and I thought it was atrocious. Hated it. It was harshness incarnate and too loud for home use and too quiet for band practice IMO.
I use a Randall RD5 now to practice at home, and it's much better.
Hmm had the Vyper 30 and I thought it was a pretty decent amp. Some of the models were so so but very usable.
Gave it to a friend of mine and he seems to like it well enough.
I don't care for the original Vypyrs either. I did play a VIP once and thought it sounded much better. Had a less processed, more real sounding tone.
The EQs on the Vypyr is what the HT1 lacks.....but I'm still not sure if the Vypyr would be overkill for my home use.
Maybe some gigs in the future?
I like the idea of a home practice amp that can also be used for band practices and gigs, at least in small bars. That also figures into an amp's versatility: something small and lightweight when you don't need a lot of volume. For that reason, I wouldn't want an amp under 30 watts.
Yeah, no, the RD5 is not versatile at all. It's got one sound and that's it. It's also not band-practice-loud either. The EQs on the Vypyr is what the HT1 lacks.....but I'm still not sure if the Vypyr would be overkill for my home use.

I've seen the RD5 also but it lacks versatility...or it is just me?

FWIW, I don't think the Vypyr is loud enough for band practice either. I used to have to crank the master to 10 with a moderate-hitting drummer to be able to remotely hear any hint of guitar playing at all, and it goes without saying that by that level, it did not sound is best.
My current home practice amp is a Spider IV, 75 watt x 12". Small and lightweight, but 4 channel with a lot of tone/effect options. Grab and go; it's about as small as a lot of amps with a lot less power. I can play it soft, or crank it when playing with a loud drummer.
