Peavey Windsor Head Power Amp

With a few changed, jumpered and removed parts the Windsor preamp can be used as a JCM800 pre. Since a cathodyne PI was used on the Windsor power amp it would take a lot of finagling to convert it to a JCM800 style power amp. I'm laying out a new power amp board for the Windsor head based on a JCM800. I will use spade plugs and pins as needed but, plan on removing the 9 pin header and direct connect the boards with better wire. Do you guys think there is a market for something like this? Maybe $25 a board and $50 to $60 stuffed?

I think there'd be a market for modded heads at a decent price. Given the amps go for $250 ish used (sometimes lower) I'd say $400-450 is fair but it'd have to sound spot on IMO.

Why? Is the purpose to make it sound more like a JCM800? In the end it will never sound exactly like one due to the differences in the transformers. BTW if you are redoing the power supply redoing the cathodyne phase inverter isnt much harder either.

Instead of trying to make it just sound closer to another amp why not build mods to improve the sound that is already there. Fix the sound quality issues that the amp has. Let it be itself just improve upon it.

Or buy a Boss Power Stack pedal and go in to it….

The plan is to replace the cathodyne phase inverter with a long tall type, change the coupling caps to polyester film/foil and change the value and the type to silicon of the screen resistors among other things. Final bias resistor tweaks will be made once it is up and running. This will improve the sound quality. The main thing is it has to be plug and play so anyone with a screw driver can install it.

Improve how... what will it change that will be seen as a positive? Dont just say better cause what its "better" like i said before about making it into a 800 style power section, why bother with all that work you can make changes to it to improve various characteristics without doing all the work you are doing. If you want to make it an 800 clone fine but tonally what changes are you seeking.

Seems to me that the assumption has been made that an 800 power section is just "better" somehow. Ive never modded a windsor that far but the feeling I get is that a good 800 style power supply may not jive so well with the trannies that peavey has used. I might be wrong in this but the performance I have seen indicates that its a strong possibility.

I'm not against your project I just think it should be an approach from a specific desired tonal change other than just make it like an 800.
