Peavey Windsor

High Voltologist
Just posting a little update about this amp.

I have done give or take 9 gigs with it, quite a few rehearsals and it is holding up extremely well. I was a bit concerned it being Chinese manufactured but not a single issue.

I swapped out the JJ pre-amp tubes for a pair of EH's and they both brightened and opened up the amp's tone quite a bit in a very positive way. The JJ's are a bit too dark sounding for my tastes but otherwise they were fine. Next step will be a quad of Winged C Svet EL34's for the power section.

I get more compliments on my sound with this amp, it is incredible. I have owned some pretty nice amps over the years and have always been able to pretty much nail the tone I'm looking for pretty easily but something about this amp just really catches peoples ears the right way. Each of the last 3 gigs the soundman came up to me and asked what I was playing through, when they saw it was a $400 Peavey head they were in disbelief, gotta love it! The tone controls really work well and no matter what cab I end up using I can pretty quickly pull up the sound I need.

Can't say they're for everyone - they tend to be one trick ponies for the most part but if it is your trick you can't go wrong, check 'em out.

Re: Peavey Windsor

I was playing my VTM tonight, thing freakin rocks. Reminds me a lot of the Windsor I played, great to hear it is working well.

Re: Peavey Windsor

Yes, I played one in a shop not too long ago. It was sitting right next to a 6505 and a 6505+

Very sweet amp. And I think in the studio it could be pretty versatile, though switching your sound around during a live performance might prove difficult?

I think the 6505 was really more my thing, but the darn Windsor could definately do the trick...and do it well while almost being as low as 1/3 the cost...

I dunno about anyone else, but to me it kinda makes it hard to justify buying a 6505 new, unless the windsor is just really not going to cut it for your sound.

The only drawback for it was that it was bulky...too big to sit on my puny 4x10 thats for sure..but In most cases that won't really be an issue for many people.

Re: Peavey Windsor

I like these amps, glad to hear the tone improves with the tubes. I've been wanting to get one to satisfy my British tone GAS but lately I think a 100 watt head is wayyy too much for my current situation. If they'd make a 30 watt combo I'd be sold.

They make a recording combo with attenuator built in.

Re: Peavey Windsor

Thanks for the update on the Windsor.....plus, the fact that the honeymoon didn't end right away, and you're still digging it.

Peavey is like Toyota. Low maintenance, and they run forever.

Just for the sake of it, I might start keeping my eyes on used ones. I'd love to snipe one for $200 or something. I played 'em in the store a few times, and got really good tones, especially when I got the gain level set where it sounds most natural.

Re: Peavey Windsor

I haven't seen any of the small combos yet but I'll be keeping my eyes open for one. Looks like a great little combo.

Re: Peavey Windsor

I thought about going with the windsor when I first ordered through musicians friend. I'm glad I got the valve king head and the 6505 cab (thier screw up on the cab, I can't complain). I've heard nothing but good stuff from the windsor. Heard it has a nice warm vintage sound with the approprate tubes. Sounds like you found it. Now I need to find the tubes to go with my stack. I might take your find on the EH's, what kind of tone will that open up?

Re: Peavey Windsor

I'm kinda keeping an eye out for that combo too... seems uber hip on paper!

Wattage ~ What's the Windsor 'voiced' like? Similar to a marshall of sorts, more like a Boogie... or I could imagine it being similar in nature to something like the 5150...

In other words, what's it "excell" at?

Rock krunch? Gained out nu-mental? It's a single channel right?! (for some reason I can't get to the PV site)

I saw one at Guitarget today... didn't plug in though... place was WAY too crazy & noisy... I kinda wanted to play it.

Yeah that combo has some really cool tricks up it's sleeve, can't wait to try one myself. It looks to be much different than the head.

I would say the voicing on mine is more like a hot rod JCM 800, the mids are a little different and it has the capability to push a lot more bass but that's what it is aiming for. It is more a Rock and Roll amp than a Metal amp to me, definitely not Nu Metal. I would say more AC/DC, 70's - 80's sounds than a very modern amp if that helps. The Crunch channel on a XXX with a little less gain if you are familiar with that. All the controls work well within their range.

The cabinet isn't as good as the head, the cab is well made but I am not sure I love the speakers, they are far better now that they are broken in. If you can try it through a few different cabs you might like it better that way.

As for what the tubes open up Carpy. The JJ's to me are very stiff, very dark tubes it makes the amp seemed compressed a bit too much for me. As soon as I put the EH tubes in I felt like the uppermids and highend were set free, it fits my sound far better.
