Peavey XXL

Played a Peavey XXL half stack today and was very impressed with the Crunch and Higain channels. Very cool rock'n'roll set-up. I have to say it beats my Valvetonix AD-60 1x12 combo for pure rock'n power. Great for palm mutes. Easy to dial in and reminds me of playing a Marshall DSL-50. But it's solid state. I didn't even realize it was solid state when I played it. Peavey got it right with the XXL.

$800 used for an XXL half stack. Thinking of getting it. The only advantage I can think of with the Vox Valvetronix is that I can play at TV volume on the 1 watt setting. But the Peavey XXL being solid state it should sound decent at low volumes. Anybody using one at home?

Re: Peavey XXL

If I recall, I was poking around at Andy Sneap's studio site, and noticed he has one of those in his studio arsenal. I thought that was interesting, but then again, I'm weird like that.

edit: no, that was an XXX:

Re: Peavey XXL

800 is a ripoff, IMO. The heads can be had for 300-400, and you can get solid 4x12 for less than 400 if you look around.

For 800, I'd search out deals on an XXX or 5150, either snag the combo or save up more and get the matching cabs - both sound solid.

Re: Peavey XXL

Yeah, $800 is a bit steep, then. I'll look around. The XXX is the all tube head, should be killer. But I'm thinking the XXL for home or garage jamming because it sounds very good and being solid state it won't have mega volume like all tube.

Re: Peavey XXL

I tried an XXL 2x12 combo once and thought it sounded great. Tried the same one in the same store again a few weeks later with a different guitar and thought it sounded horrible. Found a deal on a used one that made it worth taking a chance on a couple months ago, and so far I find it kind of... eh.

In a brief side by side compro my best friends both preferred it to my Peavey XSr™ head on a Carvin Legacy 2x12 cab, but their main amps are a Marshall AVT50 and an H&K Attax 100. :27:

It sounds okay running through the Carvin instead of its internal Blue Marvel speakers, so I had been thinking of replacing them with V30s or maybe a 30 and a T75, but now I'm leaning towards selling it off and keeping an eye out for a good deal on the head version. Doubt I would ever use it enough to warrant taking up a 2x12 combo's worth of space around the house. [Same goes for my Randall G2 combos. Gonna ditch the lumber and go headhuntin'.]

Re: Peavey XXL

$800 for it is a bit too much! Maybe $500-600 max for the halfstack IMO. It is a great sounding amp and versatile also! I had one and really liked it myself! It fooled alot of "tube" people and they could not believe it was SS.

Re: Peavey XXL

Yeah, it fooled me, too. I thought it was tube. I think a big part of the sound is the cab being 4x12, which is great for power chords and palm mutes. It just screams heavy rock. At first I was turned off by all the features and dials & switches, but they all seem pretty usefull and easy to dial in. I'd get on if I see a used one for $600.
