Peavey XXX Super 40 EFX Combo.....

I'm selling my flextone due to it sounding like garbage. I've made threads about it, basically it just has no life, sounds muffled, sounds like a wet-towl is thrown over it etc. Well I wast a somewhat cheap tube combo...I found this....

seems like a great deal, but i don't know much aobut peavey combos. what do you guys think aobut this amp? i mostly play hard stuff, lots of gain. i have an 81 in my LP, so I'm going kinda for a Metallicaish (older metallica) tone. I've heard nothing but great things about the xxx heads, so is this similar tone? I don't want to have the "wet-towl" problem again. i have no way to test amps out, so i gotta rely on word of mouth. so, yay or nay?

oh, and will it be loud enough to mess around with a band that plays pretty loud?

thanks

I love it. You'll have no problem with the wet-towl tone problems. It should be loud enough; but if it isn't, a seperate cabinet will work wonders.

It's all tube, right? I know absolutely nothing aobut tubes actually. Should I replace them when I order the amp? How much are they? What kind? etc....

Re: Peavey XXX Super 40 EFX Combo.....

Yessir, all tube. Should have 3 preamp tubes and one phase inverter, all 12AX7's. It comes stock with EH preamp tubes, which I really like. I believe the powertubes are Sovtek, but they'll be 6L6s with a bias switch for EL34's.

Keep the pre's, get a nice duet of JJ EL34's, and that thing will tear heads off! The stock power tubes aren't bad at all, though.

http://www.revolutionguitar.com is where I get all my tubes.

any other opinions on this amp? i wanna get as much feedback about it as i can before i order it

Re: Peavey XXX Super 40 EFX Combo.....

i was looking at reviews on harmony central, and i saw a few people commenting that the xxx 1x12 combos aren't very thick sounding, kinda tinny sounding, basically not the tube sound. i play an LP with an 81 in the bridge. I'm not concerned with jazz or bluesy warmth, but i don't want the heavy channel to be thin sounding at all. I'm just trying to get some reliable input on this amp, because like i said, i have no way of trying it out.

Be careful man. The metal grille design is actually a pattern of mudflap chicks. You might end up with a beard and a flannel shirt and a bad case of ****y-do.
