Judging by a previous thread a lot of you seem to like the Peavey XXX, does the 40 watt combo sound as good as the higher wattage ones? can you get brutal distortion from them? How about low / medium sounds? I used to own an XXL, sounded good but was missing something...

Re: Peavey Xxx

, does the 40 watt combo sound as good as the higher wattage ones? sure, you can crank it easier

can you get brutal distortion from them?
most definitely. Cleans are its downside imo. reason why i wont buy one.

How about low / medium sounds?
eh? low/ medium? volume wise? sure.

Re: Peavey Xxx

yea, lower / medium volumes...sorry...cleans are bad huh...hmmm may have to rethink this then...are they just not detailed or no headroom or what?

Re: Peavey Xxx

i just dont think theyre very warm. then again, its really hard to find an amp with great distortion AND a great clean, youll probably have to bite on one or the other depending on price.

im looking at mesa rectoverbs. great cleans, great distortion, only thing is they cant do really heavy stuff. there's always pedals though.

Re: Peavey Xxx

I guess if I had to choose I'd take the great distortion, that's the territory I'm in most of the time...
As far as then cleans go, like you said there's always pedals to accentuate the sound.

Re: Peavey Xxx

im confused on what to buy.

i like playing blues to metal, and i still dont know what amp. i think ill just buy a fender for its cleans, and use various pedals to get the other tones i want.

*confused*

Re: Peavey Xxx

The cleans aren't that bad actually, but no fender. Sortof dry, but it sounds great with a good warm neck pickup and a bit of chorus splashed in.

If you're going to get the combo, get the 60watt 1x12. Trust me, you will want the Crunch channel to have it's own EQ. I use the crunch channel as my main sound, and I love it.

Re: Peavey Xxx

yeah, i use the crunch channel the most by far too. the cleans sound good with some light phaser i think. adds more depth
