my first tube amp was a peavey 5150 block letter head that I purchased from a local shop on cosignment for $400.

Funny, I have a Rectumfrier now, trying to sell it for a 5150/6505. I need that bottom end to be tight, not fried.

The old USA-made guitars and basses were quality, if they lacked in the looks. You will not find a MIM Strat that can top a USA T-60.

The Hydra double-neck 6/12 is also a great player, and unlike the much-lauded Gibson "Jimmy Page" double SG, you can reach the upper frets.

Their PA gear gets a bad rap for being used by so many C&W bar bands, which favor the midrange nasally tone.

However, they can thump and grind just as good as anything.

I never played any of their guitars but back in 1979 when I first joined the Navy , right after I finished boot Camp I was sent to Meridian, Miss. for my training school as a Ship's Serviceman. That job entailed the running of the retail stores , Laundries, and Barber shops on both any of the Navy's ships or their bases. At that time, I didn't know that Peavey's factory was located right there in Meridian. I was lucky enough to get a small tour and was able to buy a Backstage 30 combo from them, which I kept until around the mid 90s or so. That was a great sounding amp as far as the clean channel was concerned and was plenty loud for a 30 watt combo. I also had a couple of their USA made Bandits with the most recent being a 1989 Bandit 112 Solo series which I recently swapped for a Fender Studio 85 . I always tell my friends that the 2 things which will survive a nuclear war are cockroaches and any USA made Peavey amp. LOL.

One of my favorite guitars that I have owned is a US made Peavey Wolfgang Special (hardtail-solid color) Wonderful playing, feeling and sounding guitar!!

i'm on my 6th peavey amp, and a peavey milestone 4 bass that gets passed between my brother, my dad and myself once in a while.


1. 80's stereo chorus 400.
2. vypyr 15
3. vypyr 100
4. classic 50 4x10
5. valveking 100 head
6. JSX head

the issues i had with the vypyrs are the non-adjustable noise gate causing a hissing sound when picking lightly(it basically makes clean tones useless) and completely freezing up sometimes. the tone was excellent for a modeler though.

the classic 50 and valveking sound really good after some tweaking, but they were both one-trick-ponies. so i'm selling them both after getting a JSX that can do everything.

the milestone IV bass sounds ok, but the neck is so bad that it's past the point of leveling the frets.

What do you guys think? Does Peavey get a bad rap from guys who take pride in their Warwicks, Conklins, Gibsons, Soldanos, Bogners, Diezels, and Engls?

I give mad propz to people who can afford this kind of stuff. I'd love to have a Fryette Sig:X and a few of the Orange tube amps. Matching cabs too.

But life is what it is, and I'm glad to be able to get great tones out of the Peavey gear I own. I am not a Peavey freak, using their stuff exclusively, but I've accumulated a nice stash of some of their cooler gear.




I don't have a pic here, but I also have a beat up red made in USA Fury bass that gets the most amazing classic P bass tone. I like the neck better than a Fender P bass because it's slimmer and narrower.

I love Peavey's. Especially the older MIA axes. I have 2 Patriots and a Predator. I also have the import Tele clone, Generation EXP. Mine came stock as HSS, but I've converted it to Tele-Gib with a pair of Duncan-Designed HB-102's. (Jazz/JB set.) That import is one of my favorite guitars.

I also have a Windsor head, which I rarely use. 100 watts of "high-gain" tube power is isn't very well suited for "bedroom" wanking. :naughty:

The Patriots are killer guitars with a decent set-up. I'll probably keep them forever.

No, but those were very nice pickups! Actually now that you mention it, a pair of those in a Strat would be killer!!!
I was talking about their regular Strat style singles from the old Predators.

When I was in high school I tore my knee out, dad bought me my first Peavey amp. I rocked it for 6 years and then sold it to a college roommate. He texts me just the other day telling me he found the manual for it. He's played it every day for the past 16 years! Tough like tanks those old bandits!

I'm a huge fan of the Peavey brand, especially the custom shop Masterpiece 50 and Sensation 20. I had a local amp tech in Santa Barbara look at the Sensation and he was really impressed with the quality.

Oh, that's good news! Maybe my Bandit 112 is just playing 'possum.

It was a fine amp for my needs at the time. After the power amp section died, I used the preamp out to feed a Krell KAV-250a, bridged, for some unbelievable amount of power back into the on-board speaker. By the time the preamp died, a friend had given me a Reverend 12" speaker he didn't use anymore, so I gutted the thing and put the Rev in it.

Sela Ward is from Meridian.

Very nice for extension cab use.

Handle on the side, for a flat, comfy seat on top.

Had a Peavey bass for a short while in the early 80's, it was great, very similar to the woodgrain one above but in red.

Never owned any of their guitars otherwise but their amps and PA gear never failed me.
