Peavy ValveKing 112: Decent tube amp?

Been looking for a decent tube amp for some time and I was recently offered this Peavy ValveKing 112 in exchange for a bass, a smaller amp, and a case. Anyone know if they're any good?

I have one of the earlier ones, maybe mid/late 2000's. Not sure what they sell for now but back then it was in the $300 or mid $300 range new and at that price it's not a bad amp. The earlier ones were prone to hum, some did some didn't. Mine hums and I never bothered with any of the supposed fixes. I don't play it a lot but it still runs fine. Again, don't know about the newer ones but the older ones really benefitted from a speaker upgrade too. I've been inside the amp to do the bias pot mod and I'd call it standard Chinese build quality for a budget amp. But like I said, mine still runs fine.

Would you think a fender hot rod deluxe or blues junior would be better for something like classic rock/blues? They seem to be in the same price range.

You're talking about the ValveKing II's, right? So, knowing the cost of the HRD I'm guessing that the VKII 112 is in the $700 range. Never played a VKII and know next to nothing about them. All I can say is that I wouldn't have paid $700 for my VK. Again, not that it's a bad amp, just that it wouldn't be a value at $700, IMO. I cant really give offer a valid answer/opinion to your question. I'll leave it to someone that knows all of the amps that you are interested in.

Re: Peavy ValveKing 112: Decent tube amp?

If we're talking the original Valveking 112, it can certainly handle classic rock and blues. The speaker that comes in them is ok, but it can be swapped out pretty easy for something better. I've read that it's supposed to be based on a V30, but I'm not sure.

I have a Valveking 112 and a Blues Junior. I like the Blues Junior, but I've had issues with the tube socket tensions and the output caps failing. They're good amps, but they have reliability issues if you're going to gig with them regularly. We've had many of them come through our shop with broken knobs and tube-socket issues.

If you're talking about the Valveking II, I can't help you. Haven't played one. But I like my original one.

I had a Blues Jr. (sounded - to my ears - uber generic in no time flat) . . . and my cousin had an older Vlalveking head.

I was not a fan of the Valveking either. Very bland sounding, at least to my ears.

He eventually sold the Valveking and got a Laney GH50L head - so much nicer sounding amp, imho.
If it was my money, i would take the Laney or a 1st gen Hot Rod Deluxe / Deville, any time over the Valveking.

I found a like-new fender super champ XD for $150. Despite it being a hybrid amp, it sounds incredible with the voice options.
