I find the XXX to be a bizarre kind of mushy and stabby combined together. It's like a knife cutting apple sauce. It's not a bad thing at all, but it's what I hear.



That being said, I think the only great amp out of the three is the 5150. It's darker and "wider" than the other two in my opinion... Which just happens to be my taste.


Also, the JSX is not a XXX. They are two entirely different beasts.


XXX = Punch
JSX = Crispness
5150 = Darkness

You aren't too far off in what you observed...but the XXX is just as "crispy" as the JSX, the big difference the gain knob.

When playing soemthing like Battery (high gain, with cut and punch), I would set gain knobs as such:

Recto: 4 O'clock
Road King: 2 O'clock
Stiletto: 3 O'clock
Mark V: 2 O'clock
Bogner Fish: 2 O'clock

XXX 10 O'clock....yup, only 10 O'clock

I really like the 5150 also, but I just don't have the room for one.

Re-tube a XXX with KT-77s...a lower gain tube in V2, quality tubes in the other spots, and be prepared to be amazed. I can see the comments on the XXX with the stock tubes, but after re-tubing as above..its totally a different animal. Just brings out everything I was looking for...more useful gain...more organic sound...more cut...less Death Metal-ness...just win win win.

I now have a killer rythem tone on the Ultra channel and the Crunch channel.

I can't stand when people say they hate how the 6505 can't get a good clean sound. These are the same type of people that would complain Porsche 911 doesn't have enough room for a bike and 2 kids in the back. The 6505 is a purpose built machine and in no way is a Swiss army knife, if you want fender cleans then buy a fender.

Sorry... blacked out for a second. the XXX(3120) and JSX are essentially build on the same platform but the JSX s dialed in a little differently. FYI The JSX's are being discontinued so if you like it I'm sure you can find a killer deal out there. All 3 are great amps but if you want awesome distortion the go 6505, just massive gain with no frills. The xxx/jsx platform is meant to offer more option but just let your ears decide. My money goes on the 6505 though

how does the gate sound? i've never liked noise gates but imagine that if peavey put one on the board it'd be less likely to be a frequency-killing PITA; has anyone given it the obligatory P90 test? is the gate only on the ultra channel or is it across all 3?

and what's the deal with the JSX speakers in the quads and combos?

The gate isn't great in either the JSX nor the Bugera 333XL which is a JSX copy (I happen to own a 333XL btw).
A build in gate is generally NEVER going to be as good as an external gate.
As you probably know, my Ibanez RG 7421 is rocking a set of Blackouts anyway, and that makes it much easier to avoid feedback when I'm mic'ing up my 333XL without a gate and the level of noise is really not so bad, nothing that can't be edited later in the DAW.

A mate of mine who plays in the band 4arm (Melbourne thrash/groove metal band) rocks a XXX with a Boss NS-2 (he's a passive pickup guy at heart too, Dimarzio user since they go well with the Ibanez guitars he uses with the band, but he likes SDs for other stuff) and honestly, when he's playing live, the difference with it on or off is so minimal on the tone that it's really just better to have that insurance that you're not gonna horribly feedback in between start stop riffs or those moments you forget to turn down the volume knob on the guitar

The built in gate is fine for what it is - a post-preamp, pre-poweramp gate. It's like having a gate in the FX loop - it cleans up hiss from the preamp, and that's it. Don't judge it on it's merits of eliminating feedback, since that'snot at all what it's designed to do - that's what a pre-preamp gate is for.

HA! It's funny...for awhile there I thought the noise gate on the JSX was BROKEN...I was about to complain to the seller. I eventually found out just how SUBTLE the gate is on that amp. If you don't use lots of gain, you won't notice.
