pedal and power amp setup? bass/guitar

Anyone here use a simple pedal and power amp setup for guitar or bass? I'm not really talking the typical line-level preamp/power amp rigs, but more of a distortion pedal and a power amp, or booster pedal and power amp. Would it even sound good or work if it wasn't line-level? I'm thinking it might for bass.

Reason is, I made a lil' clean booster awhile back that has A LOT of volume available (not sure how much gain it puts out) but I thought I could use that with my bass guitar into a loud carvin or behringer power amp (both have great prices and tons of wattage) to drive a speaker cab.

My amp head has no preamp controls. It has an on/off switch, a fuse, an instrument in jack, a speaker out jack, and tubes and trans. It doesn't even have a volume knob. I usually run a single distortion pedal or maybe a few different pedals into it for tone control. Using just a dist/OD, EQ, or compressor is cool. I just treat the pedal's knobs like amp knobs.

I don't have a separate bass cab right now, but the same amp with a bass cab and a gain pedal would work well for my bass also.

just out of curiosity....what is this power amp of which you speak?

It is a one-of-a-kind based on 5F6A ('59 Bassman) schematics built by Jim Frenzel. But tube power amps from Marshall, M/B, Engl, VHT, and Carvin are popular with guitarists and bassists for similar applications.
