Pedal help

I play through a Peavey XXX Combo. Does anyone have a recommendation for a pedal that does the class a break up. The clean channel on the XXX doesn't breakup. I need something that that breakup before becoming full on distortion like the other two channels on this combo.

The Tech 21 Double Drive was designed for exactly this purpose. You could blend Class A style breakup (Vox, Matchless) with Class AB style breakup (Marshall, Fender). THe only bad thing is that it's been discontinued. You might find one on Ebay.

And you can't overdrive it!

I use an MXR Wylde OD for rhythm OD and a TS-9 for lead OD, but that's for pushing it past natural OD and into the realm of tube distortion.

They might help you, but I'm not too sure. I've never heard a tube amp that didn't OD naturally before.

The XXX combo is just a gussied up version of the old Prowler. It's a killer amp, but it's clean channel is exactly that:clean. Rod11 on the board has a prowler. He uses Sovtek power tubes in it and it did loosen up. Another good tube is the EH 6L6 if you need a bit of break up.

Didn't know that.

I've seen a few 5150's, but I've yet to see a XXX in person.
