Pedal that will make a british voiced amp sound american?

Re: Pedal that will make a british voiced amp sound american?

I've always associated terms "American" and "British" voicing with tubes -> American: 6L6/6V6 British: EL34/EL84

After all, it's one thing that verý clearly differentiates amps, and you can't really copy that piece of amps tone in any other way.

I also don't think you can get "British" amp to sound "American" in any practical way. But if some figures out some cheap way to do it, I'd be very interested about it too!

(Other way around would be easier, as EL amps tend to be more contained and compressed sounding. I think you could get close with "American" voiced amp + overdrive/booster + compressor...)

This is exactly what I meant with the American British thing.
Ironically I play through a Bogner Ecstasy 101B, an American amp with a purely British sound :D :rofl

IM4tone, thanks for confirming the Joyo/Harley Benton pedals are noisy, I am getting rid of my (modded) OD-1 and TS-9 for the exact same reason. My klon clone is not noisy or hissy at all.

I have decided on the TC Electronics Dark Matter. Its got a voicing switch for emphasis on low or high mids (american and british flavour perhaps) plus treble and bass control knobs. I like very much from reviews and videos that people say its not very compressed sounding.
It will be in the mail tomorrow, I'm hoping this will get me some cool tones.

I'd just like to reiterate that these JOYO/Harley Benson and Tech 21 Character pedals sound very authentic. I've been very happy using them in conjunction with an inexpensive noise gate. Noise gates IMO are not 100% transparent. I can hear (ever so slightly) it kicking on/off. It depends on just how fanatical you are about such things. The pedals were not acceptable to me by themselves, but I can live with using the noise gate given their great authentic tones.

For someone in a band doing covers of various bands, you can get Fender, Marshall, Mesa, Vox, & Hiwatt (tech 21 only) amp sounds. JOYO's @ $40 ea. are hard to beat. JMHO

Wait... if you cant get a "american" sound with that 101B you are using it wrong, no ifs ands or buts. You can dial the clean channel on that thing to sound like the biggest baddest twin you have ever heard. If you are just trying to a different voice out of it. Your best bet for an alternate voicing would be to get something like the amp tweaker tight drive and put it in the effects loop.

you are 100% accurate, I should clarify that I'm much more interested in getting different voicing options for the red and/or blue channels.

Re: Pedal that will make a british voiced amp sound american?

Hey you know what? This might seem like a shameless self plug but in a discussion about it, someone mentioned that it sounds like a self-contained "American" sounding overdrive and keep in mind, I'm using a Marshall for this demo. With the switchable circuits (we wanted as far away from the Tubescreamer mid hump as possible) switchable diodes and built in boost, it might be exactly what the doctor ordered. Check it out, particularly when it's using it's own gain into the amp clean (it has a LOT of useable gain on tap for an overdrive) and see what you think.

The Tech 21 Blonde pedal into the effects loop of you amp will give you exactly what you want. It isn't noisy, and it sounds great.

Re: Pedal that will make a british voiced amp sound american?

The other way around is too easy. A "bloody mesa" now sounds exactly like a British amp. lol
