First, does it work with a power adapter? Second, make sure the wires are properly connected to the battery clip, and to the board. If anything's loose that could be the culprit, in which case it wouldn't be too tough to fix, you'd just need to open up the pedal and resolder the connections, maybe with a new battery clip.
Beyond that I'm not sure what else the problem might be, but good luck.

It works just fine with a power adapter.
The clip looks pretty sturdy, but it could have easily been yanked too hard at some point. Or it might be in the pedal. I can do those fixes. Let me see.
When I plug it in, and bang REALLY hard on the strings (custom p-90 input level) I get static-y noise just barely coming through. No battery light comes on though.

Sounds like a bad connection between the battery and the rest of the pedal. You probably yanked the battery snap a bit too hard once or twice, or it was a bad solder job in the first place that finally failed.
Take the sumbiotch apart, find where the battery snap connects to the rest of the circuit, and re-flow the solder. If it's partially disconnected, remove the bad connection, re-trim the battery snap's lead, and re-solder.

On most pedals, When you plug in the AC adapter. It shunts the DC battery. Take a look at the ac plug to see if it's stuck in the shunting position (Metal Tab usually )
