Pedalboard Users...I've got a Q for U!

I know that some pedals would be better used infront of the amp and some better of in the Loop.

Now I'm just wondering, I got this nice pedalboard and everythings nice and snug. I'm just wondering how you guys manage to send some through the loop and others simply right infront of the amp.

Is it as simple as it sounds...just overpass the ones that go to the loop and send another pair of cords to and fro the pedals into the Loop? Seems like that would get messy and crowded very fast. Anyone, please share your thoughts/experiences.

It's messy, but that's what I actually used to do. I'm learning to deal without an FX Loop now. I find that getting my pedals to work properly is all a matter of putting them in the correct signal path. I don't really miss mine as much as I would have thought to be honest.

Do you really want one lead going in from your axe...

2 going to your amp and another one coming back?
maybe tape up your leads together so its just one chunky one leading back to the amp...

I took three cables and created kind of a snake using spiral cable binders.

One goes from my compressor to the amp's input. One goes from the FX send to my in-loop FX. One goes from my in-loop FX back the amp's FX return.

But OD is soo essential to put that little extra smoothness over a tube amp!! And chorus over split cleans.... :32:

my current setup with a few normal pedals and a GT5 is one cable going from the guitar to the 1st pedal, then going out to my amp, and then two cables connecting the GT5 that I use as an effects engine to the FX loop of the amp. The count in the power cable in the mix as well.

It's not messy as long as I tie up the cables with those little velcro ties.

yuo could always get one of those MIDI switchers, that allows you to switch pedals in and out, and to connect them however. woudl need a rack setup, but.......

With the first method, it gets a tad retarded at times;

1) Pedalboard in (from guitar)
2) Pedalboard out (to amp)
3) Amp channel switch out
4) Effects loop out (to pedalboard)
5) Effects loop return (R) (to amp)
6) Effects loop return (L) (to amp)
7) Power

.....

Someday, I'll upgrade to the second method (rack switcher w/ midi footcontroller);

1) Midi cable
2) Power

I did have a G-Major for a little while but the damn thing was just too complicated for me. I don't understand how to use MIDI and the manuals just confused the hell out of me. Granted it was the more economical solution cable wise but it just made my brain hurt. Guess I'm just a pedal-pusher! :smoker:

On the contrary, I use OD's even on high gain amplifiers...and I'm sure many others do. It just gives you that much more control and dynamics to your sound. Don't make it overkill, but it's always nice to be present. Mix it with your PA distortion and you'll end up with a nice round distortion when blended with the PT punch.

well, for me, its no biggie

i use one distortion pedal, which sits ontop of my amp

and then just a touch of reverb for fattening

maybe a line selector would help? If you're using pedals for distortion, just make sure everything else goes after that, except maybe EQ, but thats personal preference

That is exactly what I do when I am playing thru the Tech21 - seperate cables to run my chorus and delay thru the loop. Pain in the arse.

But since they are not line level (Analogman Clone chorus and Boss DD-6) I find they sound better in front of the amp than they do in the loop of my Tremoverb. I need a G-Major so I can use my cool parallel effects loop. Loop induced GAS.

I have yet to use a pedal thru the Rectifier effects loop that really sounds good - T.C. Electronics SCF (with the ability to set the output level on the SCF this one came the closest to sounding decent, but it was still kind of harsh), AM Clone, Boss DD-3 and DD-6; I even tried using a Boss GE-7 in there just as a boost and it added either noise or a weird distortion like you mentioned, depending on how much I turned up the levels. I have yet to try a line level output processor, but from what I have read on a Mesa forum that is what is needed to best utilize the loop.
