Pedals: Input on Right, Output on Left -- Why?

Well, I almost asked the following question:

"Why are the inputs on the right and the outputs on the left for effects pedals? Since most people around these parts read left to right, and most things are laid out left to right, why not effects pedals?"

As I was starting this thread, I realized why the input is on the right instead of the left. Most players are right-handed, so the guitar cord is coming out of the player's right. If the inputs of effects pedals were on the left, the guitar cord would always be running across the front of the guitarist. Duh!

As you were.

Plus I think that once one person established a "standard" everyone else basically has to follow suit because if theres a pedal XYZ someone made with reversed jacks, it would be quite a pain to implement into an existing pedal board

Re: Pedals: Input on Right, Output on Left -- Why?

Not only do we left handed guitarists have far fewer available choices for guitars out there, now we need to deal with that pesky guitar cord running the wrong way!!

On second thought, Hendrix would have had the same cord issue, so perhaps effects companies should have the "Hendrix mod" to put the inputs on the left for the right handed players...I'm now convinced having the cord pass in front adds significant mojo.:joke:

Yeh some pedals have it backwards (more commonly when on the top so its not a major issue).

The later (black) Russian Big Muff's input is on the left. The older and far superior green one has a conventional right input.
