People who buy "only" signature model guitars

I was just browsing other guitar forums and looking at threads, posted pix of everyones gear and im not sure what to make of some peoples guitars.
Now this could be just me but why "only" buy someones Signature guitar, i mean why spend thousands and thousands on sones elses custom made to "their" spec instuments??????
Some of these guys have 7 or more guitars from the same "guy" or band" and thats all they own..... nothing that express's their own style/personality.

And these guitars arnt cheap..... and theyre always going on abou what guiatr he/they used on there last tour and i wonder what the next sig model from them will be...... never mind the cost or how it looks or whatever they have already purchased it just because its a model this person uses/or puts there name to it....

Sorry if this sounds negative but i cant get my head around it! :smack:

Just find it rather sad.

Re: People who buy "only" signature model guitars

You're talking about Gearjoneser and his Les Pauls? :laugh2:

Seriously though... Sometimes a signature model will be the one that fits. To me it's the Christian Olde Wolbers signature Jackson. I only have 2 Fear Factory songs, and that's because I was interested in the guitar before I had heard anything from them. It's very likely that some musicians have the same taste as some of those who made it up there and like their signature stuff. In this case buying the sig things is cheaper than going custom :)
Of course some buy it to be the person. Then I say 'whatever floats your boat'. Why care... if they want to mimic someone else that much, I'll let them do. I'm happy having my own style on someone else's guitars' specs, should it happen :)

Meh, I don't get it either but they can spend their money how they want I suppose. That just leaves lots of other cool guitars for me to buy ;).

Re: People who buy "only" signature model guitars

I agree with you guys, I mean, I like Joe Perry, Eric Clapton, Zak Wylde, and all those guys, but I don't want to be them or sound like them. Sometimes, I feel like people who buy and use those sig guitars are either comparing themselves to the artist, or have a serious identity crisis, or both. All I know, is when I walk into a club and see a Zak bullseye LP, or a EVH painted guitar onstage, I am immediatly turned off, and as I'm reaching for the earplugs, I'm thinking WTF! Playing your hero's guitar is not gonna' make you a better player, and it ain't gonna make you sound like him.
While we are at it- who is Tom Delonge, and Johnny A.and why do they deserve their own sig Gibson?

I have a Lynch replica made by GMW and love it. It doesn't have anything to do with me trying to be Lynch-like. I just always thought this particular guitar was pretty bad ass looking so I had one built. If someone came into a bar I was gigging at and thought I looked ridiculous I really wouldn't care one bit, I'd still be playing on stage and they'd still be in the crowd watching.

I'd like to own one of those EVH Charvels too.... they REALLY look cool IMO. :13:

Re: People who buy "only" signature model guitars

I like the SRV sig. Not because I want to play exactly like him, but because I LOVE the neck. I dont like the gold hardware, or any of the other stuff, well besides the sunburst finish. But I love the way the neck feels. That's why I'm gonna get one of them Warmoth or that other company thats better build me one. Sorry, I'm a little out of it at the moment.

Re: People who buy "only" signature model guitars

I dunno.

To be honest, the only time I worry about what guitars folks are buying is when I'm selling something.

Re: People who buy "only" signature model guitars

i was gonan get a 5150 replica cuz i think it looks awesome, then i realized, its seriously a one trick pony, for 1000. (haha not the charvel one, www.meanstreetguitars.com) instead im making my own "frankenstrat" haha. i like how slash's sig has the fishman bridge, but 4000? i could put the fishman on my lp for a lot less than that total cost...

That's cool, you are more than welcome to play whatever you please, and more power to ya'! f it fits your needs, great-I'm not trying to start a pissing contest, just stating my opinion.
I was mostly talking about the obvious sig guitars, usually played by guys who have no business on stage anyway.
And, normally, I'm the one on stage, been playing in clubs for over 25 yrs, the only time I'm in the crowd is when I have the occasional night off from gigging, or booking the band.

Maybe they're a fan?!?

Kinda like collecting band tour/album shirts, but a little more pricy.

Not my bag, but if it makes them happy, leave 'em too it.

Hey hey I didn't say that 2nd quote FOO!! Take my name of that shiznat.

Re: People who buy "only" signature model guitars

I wouldn't buy a signature model just because of the name (unless I had a lots of money to burn :D ), but if it plays well and has the tone you wont why not (although you could probably buy a similar guitar make a few modes and have the same thing at a cheaper price).

The Tom Delonge (of Blink 182) model is a desperate (and blatant- when have you seen Delonge playing anything but a Fender prior to the endorsement?) attempt to attract younger buyers to Gibson *proper.* Johnny A. is a seriously badass guitarist, and the guitar itself is pretty nifty.
