Percussion items?

I have about $100 budget to buy some assorted percussion implements for my studio, to add some flair and flavours to my recordings. I'd like to spend most of it on things I can use in some significant roles, rather than just effect-y, superficial sounds. Anybody have any good recommendations?

Shakers, tambourine, chimes, rhythm egg, cowbell, one of those things at the beginning of Crazy Train....I forgot what it's called.

You could also consider the electronic route. Buy one of those
Korg, or Emu sequencers for around $200 used, and have a tone of different percussion AND synth sounds. Easier to record, too.

Just a thought.

I already have an electronic unit, so that's pretty much covered. That's a good point I should have brought up- my money would probably be best spent on things that are more difficult to reproduce electronically. Stuff with really strong transient response or complex harmonics.

Thanks, everyone! Keep 'em coming, if you've got 'em.

I've seen an entire band of elementary school students play on steel-drums made from the bottom of some metal barrels. Don't know how much one of those'd cost, or if you could make it yourself, but it sounded really really cool!

Talk blocks are pretty cool, so are the djembes and doumbeks jolly mentioned. Tambourines and such are also good ideas.
