Peter Green

Does anyone have an info on the SD Peter Green Pickups. I am an avid searcher for the tone that he gets with his LP on John Mayall's It's a Hard Road - Someday After Awhile (you'll be sorry) I have a LP with wcrcoils 'Darkburst' pickups installed and I am just about there but now I see that SD has this new set. With a new guitar on the way I maybe searching for a new set of PU to install.

Re: Peter Green

I don't know anything about the Peter Green humbuckers or whether they emulate his tone with John Mayall, when his Les Paul was normal, or his tone with Fleetwood Mac after Peter had reversed the neck pickup so the polepieces were pointed towards the bridge and reversed the magnet in the neck pickup so when the two pickups were combined they were out of phase.

But I believe Peter's Les Paul was supposed to have a large neck and be either a '58 or '59. Same guitar Gary Moore has now.

Most people would probably say to try alnico 2 humbuckers like the Seth Lovers or Pearly gates or Antiquitys to cop that tone...but they may have been alnico 5 like the Duncan 59's too.

Here's a couple of interesting threads on a similar subject: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=21322

Re: Peter Green

Maybe Evan can give us the scoop. I have heard that they are Antiquities with one reversed magnet and a bit of something else but hopefully someone can fill us in. Intriguing, fo' sure.

Re: Peter Green

also try this thread:
Greeny mod
you'll have to read through it a bit

even though Peter has downplayed his old LP, I think it helped, but really, his greatness is in his soul, touch, and feeling

Re: Peter Green

Gary had the pups lookad at and they are Alnico II magnets...the neck pup is upside down and the magnet is flipped...as far as I know during his time with the Bluesbreakers it was still stock...I would try a set of Seth Lovers (remember at that time the guitar was only a few years old...)...it is a 58 and did have a big fat neck...Gary had it refined, and had the neck shaved down on it...If you wanted the Mac era tone try Seth's with the magnet and neck pup flipped, if you wanted Gary's tone from Blues or Greeny try a set of Ant's with the neck pup and magnet flipped (now the guitar is 45+ years old!) Or you could just try the CS P.Green pups...if you do we all expect a full report!!!

Re: Peter Green

I haven't tried the Ants, but I agree that the Seths should get you close ... they're plucky, percussive, and after all, Seymour & Seth went to a lot of effort to get them as close as possible to Seth's original PAFs

Re: Peter Green

Actually if I am not greatly mistaken Gary Moore's Les Paul is Peter Green's Les Paul. I am sure that I remember reading that Green gave it to him around the time his mental illness kicked in and he left the music scene. The soul of PG is what is intriguing and contributes seriously to his style and sound I am sure. I consider him very underrated and I have been listening to him for close to 30 years. I checked the threads out and saw a lot about clapton in there as well. They are very close to where the soul was at during that time frame. If I decided to go with the PG's I will give you a full report but I am interested in checking out some of the mods you all describe.

Re: Peter Green

Well, I may try the PG's once I check out the sound of this new acquisition. However I am kinda thinking that I am going to check out the WCR Fillmore set as well. Thanks for the advice. By the way how do you change the magent around?

Re: Peter Green

I believe they're basically Ants, with the flipped magnet in the neck pup. As far as the magnets on Peter'/Gary Moore's LP, it's hard to say. Peter got a warmer tone than Gary does out of the same guitar. Some of that's due to aging, and the rest is due to differences in amps & settings (Gary seems to like a lot of top end), and the difference in how they each use their hands.

The Greenie mod is nice, but that hollow, out-of-phase thing gets boring after a while.

Jeff

P.S. Apologies to The Guy Who Invented. I didn;t see your post. That's interesting that Gary had it looked into. Thanks for the info.

You remove the magnet, roll it like a log, and the put it back in. Gently, natch.

It's a cool mod; if I ever get a second LP I will get the Green set for sure.

Re: Peter Green

You guys got it. The neck pickup has the magnet reversed and it's installed with the stud coil closest to the headstock. Using your volume controls, you can go in and out of phase. That's the mod.

As for the pickups, Andy Ellis the biggest Greenie authority I know, and he uses an Antiquity set with the magnet / pickup flip mod to get his tone. So, I'd go with that.

Take care,
